Prison Break: Greatness Achieved (2008)
Bellick is officially a hero :((
So many unexpected things happened in this episode. I think it's Prison Break at its best. Bellick made an unexpected choice which would surely mark our remembrance about him. I didn't know I would care about Bellick this much. I have just finished watching this episode and now I am speechless. The only thing that could appease any Bellick lovers is the death of Wyatt (did I spoil too much?). All hail Mahone! And this season will be the final one of this incredible series. It has run its course, I guess. I still have yet to see Michael in any fine suits since the first episode of the season. Gosh he's getting fatter. This review was edited after years of watching better series. 80% of what I had written here remained unedited.
The Shawshank Redemption (1994)
The Shawshank Redemption
A friend of mine listed "The Shawshank Redemption" as one her all time favorite movies and that brought on my curiosity what Shawshank Redemption was, I even thought it was a typo. The next day I went out and brought home the 10 years anniversary DVD without knowing I was going to spend the most worthwhile 2 and a half hours of my life in front of the TV (a melodrama doesn't kill, right?)
I don't know how to write a good movie review so I guess telling you what I feel about it may do better. I remembered crying a few times, being astounded by the plot twist for a moment or two and ending up sitting alone, inert and all, just because of the once-in-a-lifetime beauty of Shawshank. Just recall the scene in which Andy locked himself in the room and turned the music on, all the cons stood paralyzed on the ground, listening to the magical tune like the song of hope they had never heard before.
Shawshank is more than a feel good movie, it's about life-changing experiences, about the endless struggle against life's harshness and unfairness, about true friends who will stand by you forever... The simple yet hard to convey messages could not be handled more subtly than this.
Shawshank should have won every Oscar for any categories it was nominated, but it's all about struggling against unfairness, time's proved its monumental magnitude.
Shawshank is a lesson of life that you have to learn in just 150 minutes.
The Dark Knight (2008)
The Dark Knight Movie Review
Before going to see The Dark Knight, I had heard a lot of rumors about how easily this movie had surpassed the hype around it. Yet, I didn't take all those favorable reviews for granted and decided to see the movie for myself without knowing that I was going to be in for a special treat by Christopher Nolan.
Somehow, the director himself managed to keep the audience both entertained and thrilled during the two and a half hour duration of the whole movie, which I highly appreciate because only a director in full possession of his senses could deliver such a quick yet coherent story of the superhero we all praise.
It would be a huge shortcoming not to say anything about the acting, especially which of Heath Ledger as the Joker. I wasn't surprised the least bit to see Heath, who played one hell of a character, steal all the spotlight from other characters whichever scenes he was in. He kept the tension accumulating slowly with his ability to face everything in a creepily calm way as if he was the mastermind behind the whole plan supposedly developed by the police force. The story went flowingly due to the Joker's plan to turn Gotham into chaos, Heath did such an unconventionally perfect portrayal of the Joker that all the audience kept finding their jaws dropped throughout the entire movie. However, in one or two scenes, the Joker was taken by utter surprise; such as when he thought the citizens of Gotham city would turn their backs at each other and pressed the button triggering a deafening explosion to save their own lives on the ferryboat; but they didn't because no matter how chaotic the situation they were in, they did realize that everyone is human being and no human being should risk other people's lives to save their own.
Christian Bale as the Batman also did fulfill his role as the protagonist, the superhero of the movie. Batman himself has two identities: the playboy millionair and the man behind the batsuit always ready to fight against the evil. The complexity of the character's inner feelings requires not only a great but also sensitive actor to truly understand it and, fortunately, Christian Bale acts as if he were born for the role, born to be Batman. For many moments, viewers were feeling so insecure about the menacing Joker with his malicious laughter that something credible had to be done to put their minds at rest, and that was when Batman appeared. No one else other than Batman can confront the Joker, and like Joker said, Batman completed him. And no one else other than Christian Bale has enough whatever it is that makes Batman to make a comic character so alive.
Christopher Nolan's knack for storytelling techniques paid off quite well in this second installment of the brand new Batman series. He is gifted in keeping us viewers at the edge of our seats, guessing and predicting what was coming around the corner while the plot unveiled deliberately. For a moment for two, I thought I knew what was to happen the next scene but the unprecedented plot twists insisted on proving me wrong. Christopher Nolan is known for his scenes of intertwinement of past and present timeline and this trademark move of his adapts perfectly to the end of the movie. A movie this great doesn't hit theatre everyday, so make sure you have already booked a ticket for the earliest showtime in the nearest movie theatre. I salute you, the Dark Knight crew.
Desperate Housewives (2004)
Expect the unexpected!
"Excellent" is what I would give if I was asked to describe "Desperate Housewives" in only one word. I only caught a glimpse of DH when the TV was playing season 2 and I was immediately hooked. I played the DH marathon (the complete 3 seasons) in only 4 days and now I can't wait for the next episode from season 4 (guess it may take a while for the DVD to come out, but I don't mind waiting). You will have the most different experience with this series, from laughters to tears and everything in between. And remember to always expect the unexpected because the writers do know how to twist and turn the plot logically (of course). Moreover, the casts are amazing at their acting skills. All of the housewives depict perfectly what they are supposed to do and they certainly will put you in a maze that you don't want to get out. Maybe I am saying too much so I'll stop myself but if you are hesitating to figure out what DH is, I assure you this will be the most fun a TV series can bring!
