For Her Sins (2023)

Enjoyable miniseries (despite some plot flaws)
7 August 2023
If you're after an easy to watch psychological thriller miniseries that keeps you watching but isn't too disturbing, this fits the bill just fine. Some decent acting by the two female leads Jo Joyner (Laura) and Rachel Shenton (Emily), and an impressive performance by Laura's little daughter Eliza (Romi Hyland- Rylands). Duncan Pow also does a good job being the reliable husband who you feel a soft spot for. A basic enough premise, but based in a familiar cosy setting.

However, there are some basic plot flaws which make make whole thing a little unbelievable. For example, it's highly unlikely a child's life would be ruined completely by the historical events in this movie. As such, the extreme measures taken by Laura and her mother back in the day seem a bit ridiculous.

Nonetheless, this show packs a nice compact 4 episodes which are decent enough. Maybe it's not a must see, but it's an enjoyable ride.

Wonderful

After seeing Riz Ahmed in The Night Of, I was glad to see him on the screen again. Riz absolutely shines in Sound of Metal and completely embodies the character and the difficulties he faces.

In addition to raising awareness about deafness and the internalised views society has about being able-bodied, this film explores the complexities of relationships, trauma, pain, healing and change that we all go through. And makes you appreciate stillness and nature!

Though it deals with some heavy themes which could be triggering for some, for me this movie had enough feel good, lighter moments and community spirit to leave me feeling good and somewhat inspired.

9/10!

An honest, raw depiction. Informative and beautiful.

A very timely story which shows the emotional and psychological damage Australian border force policies have. The mental health and loss of identity narratives are wonderful as well.

Inspires us to never stop trying to make a difference and raise awareness for those less fortunate. Thank you!
