The Suicide Squad (2021)
Well we were laughing but not at the intentional jokes
I may be in the minority here but I liked the first Suicide Squad but this one fell short.
The first chunk of the movie was literally killing off a bunch of random characters just for the fun of it. They didn't impact the story line in any meaningful way. It was just a complete waste of time.
I guess if you just want to watch a bunch of people die in brutal ways with no care of there being a point then you would probably like the first 10-15 minutes of it but I like quality storytelling rather than quantity gore.
The characters were barely even skin deep. They were there purely to kill things and provide punchlines that fell flat.
Also, If there ever were some secret government operative team using violent criminals for important missions they would certainly not be as dumb as that crew. I'm no genius but I would know to check and see who can swim before sending them in the water.
I'm sure I could go on and on about the many aspects that made this movie a laughable attempt but I'll end it with this.
The creature looked like bad 90s Claymation creature with a goofy eyeball. It was beyond ridiculous looking and it's little mind control babies were even more ridiculous. Then it shoots it's little mind control out of labium in it's arm pits and they somehow know how to fly, not like a bird or a bug or any way that makes logical sense but by this bizarre bouncing action that defies all laws of the universe and just looks hysterically wrong.
I went with a friend and even though we both agreed this movie was HORRIBLE we also agreed that it has a cult appeal for it's ridiculousness and we laughed through most of it. Just to be clear though, we were laughing AT it, not with it. There were maybe a few intentional funny lines but mostly it was laughing at how awkward it all was.
Debris (2021)
I'm digging it but it's whiny.
I love the concept and the effects are legit. The female lead is good. The male lead is a bit of an over actor. Sometimes that happens in the first few episodes. Only time will tell if he sinks in to a more realistic portrayal. The heavy focus on personal dramas for both leads with almost no background or character development isn't helping any.
The music during the mysterious parts is interest and sets a nice tone but it's too loud which makes it distracting. I'm hoping they'll tone it down in the next few episodes.
I will probably watch it in the future. It's not going to be my never miss series unless they town down the whiny drama stuff. I get that you want the characters to have back stories but no one in real life talks about their drama this many times in one situation let alone BOTH leads doing the same thing. Please tone it down a little.
The Borrowed Christmas (2014)
The worst Christmas movie I've ever seen
I love stupid Christmas movies with cheesy plots and unrealistic happy endings but this is different. It's sick. A rich man pays to have a fake family for a day and the woman he pays gets children from the "orphanage," to call him daddy. Then they all decide they don't want to be paid because they had so much fun and he decides he wants to keep them so proclaims he will adopt the children and marry the pretend wife without so much as getting to know them or even ask them if they are interested.
How any person in their right mind would think it's OK to use parentless children to fulfill the fantasy of a rich guy is beyond me.
So disturbing right up to the end.
I Am (2010)
A feel good movie about the importance of caring for each other and the world.
It isn't a deep scientific study of the world or society. It's more like a fluffy introduction to the philosophical concept of people and the world being one coordinated force.
What I liked-
1. It speaks about consumerism and greed being destructive force. I completely agree.
2. It talks about the importance of love and empathy. Again I agree.
3. It has some really great interviews IMO. Far better than some movies of similar ilk. Really, they made the movie.
4. It encourages you to make changes and reminds you that one person can have a powerful influence on the world.
5. I liked the animations to explain some concepts.
6. It made me feel better and want to do better.
What I didn't like.
1. The author seems a little vein and focuses way too much on his accomplishments. Even during his interviews with these great thinkers he feels the need to ask them if they've seen his movies and then includes that in the movie. In my opinion, way to much of the movie was spent talking about his accolades.
2. Like usual they claim scientific studies but give no information in order to search for the actual study for reference. I get that this movie is aimed at the average consumer but it takes all of 1 minute to put a simple reference at the bottom of the screen for those of us who like to look into it further.
3. While I'm happy he is finding his way out of consumerism and riding his bike to work at the end, those aren't really examples of sharing the love the entire movie focused on. You can choose not to be a consumer and still be very separate and egotistical.
In summation, it felt a bit like listening to an excited teenager who's just getting out of high school and has only left their hometown on vacation explain how the world works. The enthusiasm is contagious and he has a glimmer of what it's like outside his bubble but also know there is far more than what he's seen so far.
