The Alaska Thunderfuck Extra Special Comedy Special (2021)
Alaska can do better
Occasional funny one-liners, jokes that are unrelatable and great guest performances. Alaska works best with gags, like when she brought the comedy set with her, or her quick songs, yet the donning of the costume of a comic made her unpersonable, and transformed her into someone not looking nice nor funny. Jokes are generic, potentially stolen from the internet.
However, the segments where she talks with other comedians are interesting, but they do come at times of high comedy, and kill the mood. The mixed approach of conversation/stand-up/performances fails miserably as the show special doesnt know what it wants to be.
The best parts of the special:
Guest performances; Alaska's gags (bringing comedy set on stage); Alaska's crowd work
Worst Parts:
Choppy editing; Self-praising in the interview segments.
Mr. Iglesias: Food for Thought (2020)
Not a fun watch
Culture especially when it comes to food has always been appropriated. Most of japanese cuisine is appropriated, Indian cuisine borrows from middle eastern and fusion foods exist. When it comes to cultural appropriation dismissing the origin of the culture is the main point.
This was a sad watch, with Marisol being proclaimed right, when her viewpoint is extremely narrow. Additionally, why bring down another POC with similar background (filipinos have spanish in their language, were colonized by spanish, and have cultural elements similar to latinos). It was touched upon in the end, but I would have prefered if it were another ethnicity/race appropriating the cuisine. And finding their similarities towards the end.
What is most annoying is how Marisol easily dismisses the comfort of many other latinx people in her school feel with the food Bob cooks.
Not worth rewatching.
