Reservoir Dogs (1992)
Style, Little Substance
I have many cinefan buds and they love this film, so I've tried multiple viewings to maybe see it differently, with a renewed, open mindset, but I end up with the same result. I don't get all the love and the hype for it. Onscreen violence has it's place in film -- but if it the sole component -- without a solid script -- a hip wardrobe and scattered witty dialogue isn't enough for me. The one highlight for me is Lawrence Tierney, that's about it.
Ebert said it much better than I could, "It was made on a low budget. But the part that needs work didn't cost money. It's the screenplay. Having created the characters and fashioned the outline, Tarantino doesn't do much with his characters except to let them talk too much, especially when they should be unconscious from shock and loss of blood."
Shanks (1974)
Marcel in a Dual Role
Without getting into the plot and characters, I don't understand the low rating. Marcel Marceau performance is so underrated here. Somehow, he carries this twisted fairy tale singlehandedly, flawlessly, effortlessly without uttering one syllable. Back in the day I owned a 16mm print of this William Castle gem and I loved it the first time I laid eyes. Dark, nightmarish and otherworldly. A surreal, macabre, foreboding film, and surreal is not easy to achieve, very few have captured that essence like LEMORA, THE LADY DRACULA, VAMPYR and KILL, BABY, KILL. Highly recommended.
Primal Rage (2018)
Worthy of Your Time and Attention.
I've seen most Bigfoot/Sasquatch entries into this horror subgenre and I'm dumbfounded by the lackluster rating for this well-crafted wilderness outing. Unique, original with a creature that's nasty, a thinking, stalking monster who's always one step ahead of those humans it shares the woods with. Highly recommended.
Boxcar Bertha (1972)
Don't Believe The Negative Reviews
Pure southern, drive-in exploitation and there's nary a dull moment within in it's short running time. If you're looking for action with rebellious high spirit, you chose the right film. Look for Scorcese in a cameo appearance as a bordello patron. Bernie Casey is one of the best characters in the film, a very cool role, and he's the avenging angel at film's end.
