Politics aside, The P.O.W. is a 90-minute depiction of friendship, grief, frustration, and bad luck. The script is unsentimental. The photography, capturing New York City in its 1970's state of post-WWII decay, is often breathtaking. The lead character played by Howard Jahre is exceptional. The movie flows like a 20th century Dickensian nightmare, then delivers one of cinema's greatest closing images.
In its warts-and-all honesty, The P.O.W. is quietly one of the finest anti-war anti-Vietnam films ever produced.
