Beef (2003)
6/10
It's good, but not that good.
2 December 2018
Warning: Spoilers
I was not expecting anything from this documentary and came out surprised for when i first time saw it. Let me say this, it does have excellent personalities talking about the theme in common, their own personal battles and overall does well to give both a chronology and insight of some beef.

The problem comes with the ambitious place they put on themselves, in the first minutes of the documentary it practically promises to talk about every important beef for the rap industry, even give you the hint "Eminem vs Benzino". which for some reason never does nor any of these artists appear...quite saddening.

I would say that until the Krs-One personal experience this was a golden recording and would surely be remembered but after that every new battle to talk about become more and more brief to the point the West side vs East side is summarized with the narrator speaking from Death Row Records (West side) point of view only. Quite a waste having Nas, Mobb Depp and other artists (East side) there.

Not only that, 2pac appears only to be used for the sentimentalism at the end of the film (Not that i don't appreciate it) not to be spoken by any of the rappers in the interviews as only Afeni Shakur (mother of 2pac) talks about his life. Again, a waste, having Nas (2pac fan and enemy) and others there.

I could continue pointing this mistakes but is simple to explain them, this is a movie of it's time. It could be said all of the energy the director and production thrown in there was in the first half (reaching the 90') as it is the unknown for the new generations and the last half (A large section of 50 cent and Ja rule beef, with other few interventios of rappers). which basically was the atracction for the people in 2003.

Not bad, not good either. If they tried to do a trilogy of this type of movies (they eventually did, but that is beside the point) all of these problems would instead be highlighted as the screen time would be longer and more famous personages would surely want to take part too.

I mean, you got Mobb depp there, just ask for their reactions when Hit em' up came! *******!
