Fruits Basket (2019)
Better than the original, but it still has it's quirks
I'm a little torn as to whether or not I should give it 7 or 8 stars simply because there were a lot of things that it did better than the original 2001 anime did but there are also a lot of things that I dislike though they are mostly my own personal bias. I hate that Toru calls Yuki by his last name instead of by his first name and I hate what they have done with Momiji and the way he speaks. When it comes to Momiji that's probably just because my idea of what his voice should be like from the original anime but even so, that's just really hard to get over. Oh well, I'm only on episode 6 of the season (hopefully there's still more to come as this has and always will be one of my favorite mangas) so maybe things will even out.
Looking for Alaska (2019)
Starts Strong but Drops Quickly
To be completely honest I was really excited when I saw that hulu was coming out with an original for John Green's book. It was a favorite of mine in high school and it is still one of my favorites to this day. The 1st episode started off great and follow the book almost to a T, however as the episodes went on I noticed things beginning to drift away from the original storyline. I'm about halfway through right now so I may update this depending on how it goes but so far, as a stand alone it would have been 10/10. The actors are great and the story flows perfectly, but as an adaptation of a book that I genuinely love at this point it's a 4/10 rating.
Fahrenheit 451 (2018)
If You've Read the Book, Don't Watch This Movie
For months, I waited with anticipation for HBO's adaptation of my favorite book Fahrenheit 451 to make its début; I was a huge fan of the book-obviously seeing as it's my favorite-and I also quite enjoyed the first 1996 movie adaptation when my teacher shared it with our class in 2011. Naturally, the 1996 lacked a few things, but seeing as the technological capabilities were limited then compared to what we have now that is to be expected, so when I heard HBO was doing an updated movie I was ecstatic and couldn't wait to see all of the things that had had to be left out in the 1996 version and when it popped up on my Hulu account to watch I was definitely excited...until I turned the movie on.
The cast wasn't anything close to the characters in the novel, nor were the personalities that they portrayed onscreen. The story itself-to me at least-seemed to be changed and even dumbed down for the audience of todays generation and that saddened me alone. I could have stomached most of the movie if they had stayed true to the original plot. To me they have utterly destroyed one of my favorite books.
Long story short, if you genuinely love the book and want to see it come to life on the big screen, don't watch this. If you're looking for an action/thriller sort if thing that seems to barely have a decent storyline and you've never read the book, then you're good.
