One Night (2023)
Excellent female lead series!
This is probably one of my favorite series of all time, aptly addressing the issues of complicated female friendships, perceptions over time, and of course the prevalent issue of sexual assault and how it can impact you. Very intense, kept me wanting to keep watching each episode despite the late hour. All three leads were amazing, but Jodie Whittaker in that "one scene" where her expressions perfectly conveyed her emotional responses to what she was "listening to" ( I wont spoil it for you) just broke me.
All the characters are complex, as we are in real life, each trying their best to navigate their way after a traumatic night that robbed them of their youthful openness and joy about life.
Doctor Who: Flux: Chapter One - The Halloween Apocalypse (2021)
Jodie Whittaker once again shines as the 13th Doctor!
From the minute the Doctor and Yaz appeared onscreen, bickering as they dangle above a boiling acid ocean , I was hooked. Best cold open ever. The episode had a great balance of action and humor, while still seamlessly introducing us to new foes and friends of the Doctor. Jodie Whittaker is endlessly entertaining to watch as the 13th Doctor, both in her comic and poignant moments. Mandip Gill's Yasmin Kahn has an expanded role and agency that transcends the ordinary " companion" in previous series, which incidentally acts as a great role model for young women and girls who may be watching the show. In effect, "This (season) is going to be fun!'
The Haunting of Bly Manor (2020)
My favorite show of the year! So layered!
I loved this show. It's a slow burn but man, starting episode 5 it takes off and blows your mind. There are so many layers of meaning in this show, the acting is superb, and you really care about these characters and their internal as well as external traumas. Of course, it doesn't hurt to also have the most realistic and romantic lesbian couple in all of media history emerge at the center of the story-sorry that was sort of a spoiler! Anyway it is not "scary" so much as a "thinking person's" ghost story, so adjust expectations accordingly and you'll love it and be haunted" as well!
