Play for Today: Abigail's Party (1977)
Oh Dear!
This is one of the worst films I ever saw, I can only compare it to a trip the dentist out of Little Shop of Horrors, followed by a quick shower in American History X, and finished off with a party in the cabin from Evil Dead. In short this unique film did everything in it's power to try and make me kill myself. It was tempting to end the pain as soon as possible but the person making me watch it assured me it didn't last too much longer. It was a family member making me endure the true nightmare that is Abigail's Party, if not related I would have cut this person out of my life completely for assaulting should with such awful viewing. When drunk I once got locked in a boiler-room where I was hiding for 16 hours and I would do that every day for a year if someone could give me back the time I spent watching this film. In short avoid it people, however if you have been un-lucky enough to view this monstrosity then the government has set up group counselling sessions. these are very helpful and have stemmed the murderous rage I felt at first. You can find details about these groups from you nearest citizen's advice bureau.
The Untouchables (1987)
The Best De Palma Film Ever
De Palma's best work by far and my favourite film of all time. The characters are well developed and you become involved with them. this film sparked my interest in gangster movies. I saw this when I was around 1996 at Christmas time. I came in half way through and was mesmerised. The next day I bought and have been in love with it ever since, now owning it on DVD. Well worth a look for anyone who enjoys a well shot, made, cast and produced film. My favourite of Andy Garcia's characters as well. George Stone is a well developed and unique character and couldn't have been played by anyone other than Garcia. If casting the film without seeing it I would have never put Kevin Costner in the role of Elliott Ness, mainly because I think he usually comes across as a soft git. However he takes the role and makes it his own.
You've Got Mail (1998)
Ruined in last 15 Minutes
THis film had good structure, the cast complemented each other well and there was definite on screen chemistry. Unfortunately Meg Ryan's character (Kathleen) has her family business founded by her dead mother run into the ground by Tom Hanks (Joe). Kathleen fights a losing battle and eventually loses her store at this point she says to her anonymous pen pal (Joe) "I'm heartbroken...I feel like a part of me has died and my mother has died all over again". This woman is truly miserable but suddenly as if she realises there's not long left in the movie her entire mod changes. Briefly Kathleen mentions becoming a writer but after a very convincing Meg Ryan playing a truly heart broken down to earth woman, it just seems un-realistic when in the last 15 minutes she decides what the hell I don't care too much. Her store is gone her mothers legacy lost but because the film has to end shortly she very very very quickly falls in love Joe and the film ends. Very disappointing conclusion.
