***SPOILERS AHEAD***
When I watched this movie, I thought that it was fine. It came what it did to do. Usually with these kinds of movies, I usually take them for what they are. I'm not religious, so I sort of ignored that Christian influence the movie has. I felt like there were moments that were ok, or pretty good, but then the performance of one actor couldn't match the intensity or emotional level of the other.
One example was the performance of the younger version of Bart. I thought his performance was pretty good (he had pretty good timing) and that there were good moments in there, but then the younger version of Shannon dampened his performance. I mean I can let the younger actors slide a bit because they are young.
Another example is when Bart's father (played by Dennis Quaid) dies and they have that moment together. I liked Quiad's performance and he played that last part really well, but J. Michael Finley didn't meet the intensity that Quaid had. Also, throughout the movie, Finley's performance lacked that sense of real struggle of his feelings about his father and how he abused him. One moment he's running away and then he's coming to forgive him and there's no sense of anger or his character holding on to those feelings of contempt that doesn't extend past Finley having his acting performance seem like cliché teenage rebellion.
It's like Finley only played 20% into those feelings and he just blankly stares at his acting partner for the rest of the 80%. There were definite moments where Finley was charming and cute, but he wasn't able to keep his character going.
I watched the movie with my grandma, who is very religious, and she really enjoyed it. It's not that I didn't enjoy it on some levels, but I also felt like the main actor wasn't cutting it enough for me, he lacked a good amount of emotional depth. I know that this is his first movie role, so I could kind of forgive it?
The fact that so many people had that really emotional attachment to the song that inspired the movie, makes it a sad miss because I yearned for that emotional attachment when they play the song at the end. The song is the final climax of the main character coming full circle, experiencing forgiveness and hope, but I just wasn't able to connect at the end.
