Dong Pek Ham yu sheung O Wan (2004)
If it wasn't for Miu...
This movie isn't at all what I expected. I watched it because I wanted to see Michael Miu back in action after his long hiatus, so I rented every movie he's in since he came back on the silver screen. During this movie I just couldn't wait for his every scene. His character could have been developed so much better. He's so amazing that he should have had a bigger part. I can understand what the kids are going through, but still, some scenes could have been told in a shorter manner. There seems to be a long part in the middle where the story seems to be going nowhere. I did enjoy the movie though. It's essentially centered around two kids and I like the way the filmmaker captured the vibe of where the kids grow up. It's got the warmth of Asian film-making, which I enjoy tremendously.
Ghost Month (2009)
a great find of a little thriller movie
I stumbled upon this little movie and didn't have any great expectations as to if it was going to be good or bad. I just sat there watching and eating chips and I was actually pulled in by the story. See, I think I can relate to the main character. I was an exchange student in Japan and I understand how Asian custom can be a bit offbeat to Westerners. To watch this movie without knowing what the other characters are saying because they speak another language is exactly how I felt when I spent time in a foreign countries where I didn't know the language. More, I had one or two psychotic exes I had to run away from, so what Allysa is going through is understandable. The scares are rare in this film, but it was a good thing for me as I was alone when I watched it. This is kind of a drama with a horror or thriller element I think.
