The Amazing World of Gumball: The Finale (2013)
Fourth wall breaking on the rise
Okay, if you didn't see any meta-plots before here is when it becomes obvious, the episode starts with a retrospective segment, they prank you thinking is going to be just a flashback episodes but then characters start to complain about what happened in earlier episodes, the plot here is "that they can't escape of the consequences of what they did", they start to charge them for the damages of their earlier adventures, to the point they get into jail.
After a false finale the protagonists realize that the only way to get rid of what has happened is make things a mess like they always do for "force the episode to restart", the episode ends abruptly, with all the population of Elmore trying to get to them, Gumball says the only way to get out of there is with "some magical device" for restart everything, suddenly credits roll on, granting Gumball's wish, a lot of people didn't get the joke, asking about what happened after that, the thing is that nothing happened, the episode ended (and the season too) and as all cartoons, things just get back to normal and everyone forgets about it.
At the end, a brilliant episode, as The Job, it makes the characters interact with the logical rules of his show, and this time taking a step further, playing with the episodic format in a funny and clever way.
The Amazing World of Gumball: The Job (2012)
The start of everythig
Absolutely great, the chapter that started the meta-plot in the show making the characters aware of the rules of their world (like Richard being unemployed because that's how the show was planned) and making them "interact" with making look some sort for "natural disaster", I mean, it even gets epic at the end of it, if you want a show starting to be aware of itself, this is where you should start!
