All That I Need (2005)
funny, educational
what did i learn from "All That I Need"? Don't get involved in a pyramid scheme. i'm not sure if it was real or not. at the end the credits were all the real names of the people that were in the movie. some of the scenes seem as if the actors and actresses truly have no idea what in the heck is going on. the genuine fear and sadness that takes them over at the end is hard to fake, at least the way it looked to me.
having said that, this film is by no means sad and scary. it's really funny at times and upbeat despite it's serious subject matter. i see a lot of independent films, and most of them are extremely weepy, or hard to watch because the director tries to be innovative with weird filters, jittery camera shots, and weird angles. not the case here, "All That I Need" is shot steadily in high quality video, and moves along with plenty of comic relief. i for one will be trying to get ahold of the DVD.
Envy (2004)
wow, i mean, wow.
rarely do i feel the need to rag a film, especially one with ben stiller and jack black, two of my favorite actors, but i gave this film a "1". i like to find the good in bad movies and be entertained by the small things, but this movie had no comedic value at all. i have to admit, i didn't give it a completely fair shot as i took it out of my DVD player after about an hour of watching it that, incidentally, i will never get back.
my main disappointment is that two quality comedic actors would take such horrible parts. the only thing i can think of is that the script actually was funny and it was just directed poorly. but two comedians the caliber of stiller and black should be able to overcome bad direction. who knows. bottom line, it's boring, don't rent or buy.
