The White Lotus (2021)
Not a comedy but great drama instead
I didn't have high expectations when I sat down to watch this show but ended up waching all 6 epidsodes in one go. It was addictive. You can read the other reviews to give you insight into the plot, I just wanted to write and say that its well worth your time to watch it. I know not everyone will find it as enjoyable its a slow burn and once or twice drags a bit but overall it was very well done. I am pleased that what was hailed as a limited season is now being renewed for a second season due to its "buzz" Unfortunately the second season will not have the same great cast, which is a pity as I wanted to know more about a few of the guests after the holiday, especially the family group and the Hawaiian spa coordinator/masseuse.
The Mountain Between Us (2017)
What could of been a good movie.....fall so short
I was disappointed. I enjoy survival movies and thought this would be a great watch with two great actors Kate Winslet and Idris Elba, but was I wrong. The first 15 minutes the actors look connected and ready to act, but after the crash they obviously realized the horrible mistake they made in accepting the badly written dialogue and clique script, and gave up, you can actually see them deflate on screen. Spoilers ahead! Despite being stranded on top of snowy mountains with falling snow and blizzards, no one is cold, you get the occasional shiver and artistically placed snow flakes on their faces but nothing real. Ben injures his side badly but manages to climb a mountain with a few huffs and puffs, Alex has a severe break of her leg but manages to hike down a mountain with little trouble or pain. They kill a mountain lion, cook it, but end up hungry a few days later, what happened to cooking and rationing the mountain lion meat? The dog is injured in the lion attack, receiving stitches but bounds in the snow the following day. They eat snow for hydration, the worse thing you can ever do, snow has to be heated to blood temperature first. The film offer no sense of danger in any form, no personal depth just dozens more of the 'wth.' moments and lots of whining. As soon as they found an abandoned cabin they have unnecessary sex, unnecessary as these two have no chemistry whatsoever. Shortly after that I walked out of the cinema. Did I miss anything..... I highly doubt it.
Year by the Sea (2016)
Read the books instead
Having read all of Joan Anderson's books I was excited to finally get the opportunity to see the movie, I didn't want to get my hopes up as so many times novels don't relate well on film, and this was one of those movies. The books contain deep meaningful conversations with Joan Erickson, a fascinating woman with deep psychological insight and together the two Joan's talk about life, being a woman. being authentic and what its like to grow older and looking back on experiences with hindsight. When alone Joan connects with herself on a deep level against the beautiful backdrop of ocean, nature and solitude. But this film had Joan Erickson fluttering around like a new age hippy, while the other Joan awkwardly joins in when she wasn't drinking copious glasses of wine, spouting cliche ramblings of her life. Gone was the quiet reflection of the books instead it turned into a community soap opera. There was no depth between the story and characters and little in the way to indicate this is a story of personal growth. If you haven't read the book you may enjoy this as a light movie, but it is quite forgettable after watching.
