Wish (2023)
Very cute. But lacking
Even after reading reviews I went into this film with an open mind. I actually enjoyed it all things considered.
There are definite flaws and I can see how people think this was written by AI.
Bad things: they mention points in the plot but never get back to explaining it? Like Magnifico's torn banner? We hear about why it's important a few times but it never gets explained. Or random bits where the characters would say something completely random out of the blue and leave it there without explaining. For example when Asha and the king first met he said "oh yeah I remember your father". Wait what? This is the first time you've met this girl. There were a couple instances where I was like why would they know that? Why would they say that? What was the point of that?
The lyrics for the music isn't really good... some melodies were pretty but lacked connection with the lyrics. Too many characters in this story to keep track of with no character development.
Good things: ok. A bit debatable but I kinda liked the art style? I think? It was a mixture between 2D and 3d and in my opinion worked. People were complaining the backgrounds are dull and boring. And I think that was the entire point. To make you viewer feel like something is missing here.
The star was frikin adorable and made the cutest innocent noises. I cried a bit I'll admit at the end.
The magic was really colourful and cute.
I'd probably watch it again. :) wasn't perfect. But still cute.
Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (2023)
Too many words to describe it's beauty
So damn incredibly impressed with this film in so many ways.
The pacing throughout was great. Filled with great action scenes and slow moments of just talking. A lot of great themes of growing up and trust. Even though we were skipping through lots of universes, the story was easy to follow. Entertaining characters and jokes throughout. BUT the absolute biggest and most obvious stand out is the art style and direction. Incredible. An absolute masterpiece. Work of pure art and passion. So much effort put into this film it's ridiculous. Next level. The first movie was a great established to this one. Really fantastic character building.
Won critics choice best animated film award and more awards for a reason. A must watch!!!!
A Plague Tale: Requiem (2022)
Emotionally intense
Never have I ever played such an emotionally intense game before.
I didn't know this was the second instalment but the game instantly hooked me with its plot.
The music is stunning and creates intense emotion and immersion.
The characters are wonderfully portrayed but the actors. Amecia being a stand out in particular. Her voice is just so so good.
The graphics are very well illustrated. The gore ect.
I've never played a game where they are able to put emotional weight on the death that surrounds us. For once I actually feel bad for all the dead bodies we see.
I really enjoyed the stealth and survival aspects.
I wish more games were like this!!
Legend of the Guardians: The Owls of Ga'Hoole (2010)
Visually stunning!!
Every shot is like it's own artwork.
I keep coming back to this movie but only for the themes, story, characters, but also for the animation itself. It's held up very well for it's time. Everything is so visually stunning. I'm still pretty bummed we never got a second movie and I never really understood why.
I love the level of seriousness this movie had for a kids film. Journey. Belonging. Family. Brotherhood. Revenge. Being true to yourself no matter what.
We don't get films like this nowadays. Modern movies feel so lifeless and uninspired.
I believe gahoole will be an everlasting treasure compared to the newer stuff. Filled with so much detail and passion. I love every second.
Miraculous - Le film (2023)
Nearly perfect~~
Overall I really enjoyed this movie. The animation was stellar and beautiful. I loved the particle effects that created more depth in shots. Beautiful and clean art style. It was entertaining, easy to watch. Relatable characters. I also really appreciated the references to the show, like villain designs, use of different characters brought back.
Some great romantic moments that made me so happy. Especially when comparing the show to the movie, the movie really makes up for what the show lacks in that sense. Fanfare all the way~
Couple of minus points:
The singers, especially Lou, unfortunately don't match the voice actors. And whenever there is a transition from speaking to singing It always took me out of the immersion of the film. The singing was really great don't get me wrong, but I do wish the voice actors were given a chance to sing the songs. Especially in Musical Theatre style songs, There is a difference between pop star singing and
musical theatre singing. I Personally believe a musical theatre style would've been a better approach for the music.
Some of the lines from the script were a little cliché. In a story like this I can understand, however sometimes it got a little cringe. Lines like "we are stronger together", "you're the chosen one". I was hoping for more of an original way of portraying those cliché themes.
WolfWalkers (2020)
Amazing!
One of my favourite movies at the moment. Stellar animation, you can still see the guide circles in some frames!
The music was lovely and very fitting. The art style is unique, deliberate! The story is very sweet.
The Dark Crystal: Age of Resistance (2019)
INCREDIBLE
I have only positive things to say about this series.
The story is incredible, Script is incredible, Acting is very good, the world building Is very good, Character development is soooo good, music is sooo gooooddd.
I fell in love with ALL the characters, and often a viewer will love one or two.
Fantastic work from the puppeteers too! incredible puppets with insane detail and mechanics. I couldn't even tell where there was CG animation added (well maybe I could) but it didnt take away my focus and did not distract me.
The series really wants to prove to you how disgusting the skeksis are! there horrible creatures, and they do a good job at showing it.
This series is a MUST WATCH for all fantasy lovers!
I heard that they cancelled season 2 and I literally cried... F U Netflix. Bring back TDCAOF season 2!!!!!!! :(
The Dark Crystal (1982)
fantastic
Ok lets face it...
this movie is sooooo weird! But oddly incredible.
the world building and characters are amazing. the story is interesting. the character development is well done. overall this movie is just one of those classics that simply have to be watched!!
I highly recommend you watch this movie with an open mind Or watch the prequel on Netflix first. (the prequel does extremely well at tying the story all together)
I love this movie! and I love the Prequel! Thanku for the wonderful creative mind of Jim Henson
The Lion King (2019)
Remember the Original
As far as Disney's remakes go, I feel this movie is one of the worst.
Unfortunately the only thing it has going for it was the stellar animation, and the quality of the graphics is undeniably incredible. But that seemed to be the directors main focus... and that is where the film has all its flaws.
In my opinion, the Shot-by-shot remake has bland script, bland acting with no soul and no emotion in general. Despite the incredible animation, the characters have little to no facial expression with the excuse of realism and "I want it to look like a real wildlife documentary". But what the director seems to forget is the incredible passion and symbolism that the original had.
If the original didn't exist, this would be a bad stand alone movie. As I watched it for the first time, I was only ever thinking of the original for every shot and thinking about HOW GOOD THE ORIGINAL WAS. and keep in mind I entered the theatre excited for this movie and left really disappointed. So this isn't a good movie, purely because were relying on the original. I feel as though a remake should always have something new to add and the ability to hold on its own, this had nothing.
Allegedly, when the original actor for Mufasa asked the director, "How do you want me to act this scene" his only advice was "Do it like the original",or "Do it just as you did before". This only proves my previous point further.
It feels like the director didnt care. There was nothing creative about this film. and it was nothing compared to the original. So watch the original. Thats all I have to say.
