Love & Murder (2004)
Love & Murder - Gruesom Dance Fun
Love & Murder is a tour de "farce!" I recently viewed this film at the Riverside International Film Festival and thought it was a wonderful combination of theater, dance and gallows humor. Based on his stage dance of the same name, Love & Murder showcases five scenes detailing the perverse and violent histories of the criminally insane dancers. The scenes featuring Chris Stanley, Michael Mizerany and Philip Leete work the best. The last section is some what problematic (Stickann-Skadberg tries to hard to funny) but even she can't detract from the overall quality of this production. Kudos to Malashock and Menier for a successful second collaboration.
The Soul of Saturday Night (2003)
Soul of Saturday Night 's a hit!
A long, drunken night in San Diego is filmed and danced with inventiveness and flair by choreographer John Malashock and director John Menier. Two couples, the "in love" Karen Ivy and Troy Sellers, and the combative and violent Michael Mizerany and Keturah Stickann, share an evening of sexual ups and downs and longings and lustiness.
With songs by Tom Waits and many familiar San Diego locales, this dance film will prove to be one of my favorites. Already garnering many awards, including Emmys for Outstanding Visual Arts Program, and a much deserved Emmy award nomination for Mizerany, this is an artistic feather-in-the-cap for Malashock and Menier.
