The Stranger (I) (2020)

Absolute crap

Good cast. Terrible writing: so many bad lines, so many contrivances, silly twists, all of it. An unnecessary number of characters and plotlines. And then the ending was even worse. Just deeply, deeply stupid all around. There was a sequence in the final episode that made me laugh out loud. I guess it moved at an okay pace at least.

This character limit is annoying. There's really nothing more to say. It's not worth your time unless you have exceptionally low standards or exceptionally bad taste. Thankfully Netflix will probably bury this show deep in its library since it's a few years old now.

Hit and miss, like all sketch comedy

All the episodes are very different and very creative. About half I didn't really laugh at (Downs after the opening sketch, Berlant, Dr Brown, most of Rothwell), but the others either amused or at least engaged me. They're all worth at least sampling though.

Boring, pointless, filler

And no Dibney again! Just skip to the final three minutes for the tiniest bit of ongoing story.

Bad

This is about the level of writing I expected before watching the show but been pleasantly surprised it was better than. Until now. So much supreme stupidity in virtually every single aspect of this episode. The technobabble, the laboured gay stuff, black Barbie engaging in police brutality. Hopefully it's just a blip and future episodes will return to the level of 'just okay' that I can tolerate.

Frustrating
6 July 2019
First of all, the show is too long. The episodes are almost all 60+ minutes, and there are 13 of them.

It was interesting to start with, but there were too many soap opera elements as it went on, and lots of just... strangeness. It's hard to tell how much was intentional.

The police work was sloppy and it made no sense that they wouldn't face disciplinary action for some of it, and the main policewoman wore some ridiculous outfits for an apparent professional.

The final episode really wasn't satisfying. I won't spoil anything, but this show definitely isn't worth investing the time in.

Impressive...

...ly bad.

I've watched five seasons and plan to continue, out of a sense of duty or habit more than anything.

Series pros:
  • There was one decent episode in the middle of season three, and it's the lowest rated one on this site!
  • Fun to laugh at how dumb it is. Sometimes.

Series cons:
  • Characters never make logical decisions.
  • Characters are wildly inconsistent. Consistently inconsistent, even. Even when you think you know what they would do based on what you've watched so far, they won't.
  • Horrible corny dialogue, where one character will say something and you know the exact hokey line the other character will respond with.
  • Giant, enormous, distracting false eyelashes on all the women. They're fighting for their lives with limited resources, but they always have time to put their lashes on, from their hidden, infinite supplies.
  • Plot armour. Yes, main characters die occasionally, but never when they actually should, and less and less over time. Two main characters could have died at the end of season four and the show would have been better for it, but of course they don't. Countless characters survive the end of season five illogically, then the writers arbitrarily decide some other characters will leave the show instead.
  • The two characters in my previous point then go on to create all the conflict in season five. One in particular is basically the villain of the season, but the writers don't treat her that way at all.
  • Countless very poor creative decisions. At one point, a group of characters fight to the death in a sort of tournament. Do any of the somewhat interesting supporting characters survive, or just the most boring main characters? You can guess the answer.

I could go on and on, all the more if I watched the show again from the start and took notes as I did so, but unless someone paid me to do that, there's no way that's happening.
