Apeman: Adventures in Human Evolution (2000)
A masterful introduction to the subject
This series is a masterful introduction to the study of human origins. Even nearly two decades after it was first broadcast it has plenty to offer. The series makes engaging use of graphics (made by Tomato), juxtaposed with experts talking to camera, relating anecdotes from archaeological digs and showing artefacts and explaining their significance. Some of the more colourful theories are discussed (Dart's killer ape theory, and the oft-discussed link between modern-day shamanistic rituals and Magdalenian patterns) and there are excellent biographical synopses of such figures as Eugene Dubois and the Leakeys. Pleasingly, there is plenty of acknowledgement of the contributions of African archaeologists to the advancement of our knowledge. The episode on Nariokotome Boy in particular is excellent.
I have used excerpts from this series in my lectures and lessons, and suitably supported with up-to-date material, it remains invaluable. The subject will always be ripe for revisiting every couple of decades or so, but this series provides an excellent foundation for understanding.
