Passengers (2016)
I can't enjoy this movie
Now if you are a serious Sci-Fi fan then I need to warn you there are SO MANY holes, ridiculous side plots and a cliche filled script, it's hard to watch and even a little hilarious at times. But ok, lets park this movie squarely in the fantasy section and just try to enjoy the ride.
I had high hopes at the start of the movie. It looks and sounds fantastic. Facing the dilemma of waking from hibernation 90 years too early was exciting. But the overall story I just can't get behind. Basically, an infatuated space stalker traps his pray in an impossible situation and she falls for him, because well, she has literally nothing else to do. I just can't get behind this at all, it's very uncomfortable.
The story and Sci-Fi elements get more and more implausible the longer it goes on.
Its a 3 out of 10 from me for some nice, maybe a little too glitzy, special FX. Overall, I don't recommend this movie.
Medal of Honor (1999)
Groundbreaking FPS game
This game blew my socks off the first time I played it. The SFX were amazing, total Immersion. Really gave across the feeling of chaos. Not many of their games manage that, even now. The beach landing level, wow. It's a classic game.
Jurassic Park (1993)
Epic
Excuse me, this film is from 1993 and still looks this good? Better than all the sequals, it's absolute magic. It's up there with Terminator 2 as one of the best blockbuster Sci-Fi movies ever made.
1917 (2019)
Enjoyed it even
Overall I really enjoyed this film. It was tense and emotional. The long take trench scenes were amazing and so was George Mackay's acting. But I couldn't help feeling the use of long shots outside of the trenches were not really adding to the story. I'm fact they made the film less realistic. Events became far to convienient and scripted. It destroyed any feeling of distance travelled. Then there was the cliché dumb soldiers missing every shot on our main character making him look like a super hero.
This will probably win all the awards for fancy camera work but for me it was a little style over substance. Having said that I still enjoyed the film, it's worth it to see the trench sets alone.
So it's a solid 7 from me but doesn't make it in to the masterpiece pile.
