"Don't get me wrong, there's a lot of potential here..."
OK, then, 3 years later, at least in my point of view, they indeed had lots of things in mind.
"Firstly, and most annoyingly, don't employ drunks to do your camera-work..."
Maybe this was intended to enhance a documentary-like atmosphere. OK, I can accept that this could have been over-performed.
"Secondly, don't overuse the "human Cylons" routine..."
The mechanical cylons are something from the past. They are like the non-interactive versions. And yes, the 'human Cylons' routine is no more a routine but an important part of the script that plants the seeds of doubt in the characters and infers into a deeper morality debate. And for the effects, this is not an FX show, but when the present space battles, dude, those are the most on-screen intense ones since Babylon 5 gathered almost ALL the big ships of the universe in one single battle.
"Thirdly, the Cylon "eye" on the Cylon fighters was, quite frankly, ludicrous in the extreme..."
Well, when the nature of the cylon fighters is revealed, the eye makes sense.
"OK, so what was good about the show. Well, it introduced some character traits into the main players. it's an improvement over the original, which had precious little character development..."
An improvement and a necessity in actual TV shows. Plus, not only the problems they have make them humans, also the way they evolve. We can notice some characters changes between 2 episodes due to a large (even 1 month) amount of fictional time that has passed between them.
"My main gripe, though, was with Starbuck..."
Well, Starbuck has become my favourite character of the whole show. It's surely the most complex and elaborated character, and the actress plays it really great. She's not just another Wolverine-like, and cigars are surely not the only thing to see in her performance.
"I also have problems with the way they are doing the Baltar role..."
And if you don't like the bizarre relationship between Baltar and 6, then you're missing most of the funny scenes in the show, plus one of the most important interrogants of the whole thing and that leads the character to some strange behaviors. Moreover, in season 2 episode 17 (i think) "Downloaded" this imaginary friend thing presents an awesome twist.
"In fact, considering the target audience probably consisted to a great extent of former BSG fans..." Well, this probable audience was not the objective, and thus they reach a wider group of the audience.
"All in all it's a valiant attempt to update the franchise, make it a little bit more "adult" and a little less "space opera". The story isn't very strong here and so far, to my humble opinion, neither are the characters..."
Both story and characters have evolved into a greater plot, proving BSG one of the best 2005 shows.
"...humorless show, with no strong characters and precious little story, cannot hope to succeed. All in all.......disappointing. "
Time Magazine and CNN consider BSG the best on TV on year 2005 http://www.time.com/time/arts/article/0,8599,1141640,00.html "-1- Battlestar Galactica (Sci Fi)
Most of you probably think this entry has got to be a joke. The rest of you have actually watched the show. Adapted from a cheesy '70s Star Wars clone of the same name, Galactica (returning in January) is a ripping sci-fi allegory of the war on terror, complete with religious fundamentalists (here, genocidal robots called Cylons), sleeper cells, civil-liberties crackdowns and even a prisoner-torture scandal. The basic-cable budget sometimes shows in the production, but the writing and performances are first-class, especially Edward James Olmos as the noble but authoritarian commander in charge of saving the last remnants of humanity. Laugh if you want, but this story of enemies within is dead serious, and seriously good. "
