Significant Other (2023)
Katherine Parkinson is great but the Sam character is beyond annoying
I wanted to like this but the characters are just a bit too pathetic and unlike able. Katherine Parkinson who plays Anna is as lovely and delivers a great performance full of humor and love. Unfortunately the black humor especially from the Sam character is beyond belief. His estranged wife is way too hot for him and yet somehow he is the one that leaves her. And then he wonders why his wife and children don't like him anymore. I stayed the course as the middle two episodes were not bad, but it was not worth the effort. Fun fact the ex wife (Kéllé Bryan) was a singer in the girl group Eternal in the 90s.
Celia Pacquola: Let Me Know How It All Works Out (2021)
Not a standup fan........but this was funny and insiteful
As a huge fan of Celia from such shows as her own creation Rosehaven, Love Me and Have You Been paying attention to name I few, I tuned to watch her stand-up comedy show with some trepidation. I enjoy comedies, but I don't tend to find stand-up comedy that funny or entertaining. This turned out to be a pleasant surprise. Not all the jokes worked and there were some cringe moments, but Celia's lovely and friendly personality shone through and her life stories (whether they were true or not) were very entertaining. Being about to tell jokes and entertain for almost an hour would be a huge challenge for most people, but Celia pulls it off in spades.
Bay of Fires (2023)
Quirky, dark comedy
Fast paced dark comedy that is never predictable. Great acting from all, especially the fabulous Marta Dusseldorp in a very non glamorous role. All the supporting actors are wonderful characters. Have only seen the first two episodes, can't wait to see more. Great use of the quirky Queenstown, and its unique surrounding landscape. Tony Barry sadly passed away during the making of the series, from the effects of long term melanoma, yet his presence right to end is prefect for his role. Kerry Fox is almost unrecognizable as the boss in a great cameo perfomance. A special mention of young Ava Caryofyllis as the daughter who seems to see the bright side of every situation.
The Teacher (2022)
Should have been so much better
I wanted to like this, as Sheridan Smith is always great to watch. But in this case her character is so stupid that it is just annoying.
* She knows that she has blackouts when drinking. Why would you touch alcohol then.
+ She seem to have forgotten the teacher she worked with at a previous school who she reported for sleeping with a student
* And she doesn't seem to know the address of her best friend from school who she talks to every day.
* Somehow when she is confronted by her tormentor she is able to have a calm and rational conversation with him.
If they had avoided these strange plot holes this could have been compulsive viewing.
Beckett (2021)
The main character is so annoying, you want him to be caught!
Where do I start? It was like watching an annoying remake of The Fugitive. The lovey dovey interactions better Beckett and girl friend are so irritating that you are almost glad when the accident happens. I couldn't last past the 3rd of the chase sequences as they were so implausible is was just absurd.
Old (2021)
Great idea.... not bought to the next level
The scene was set for an interesting, original film. The characters were all in place, and then the dialogue became clunky and the characters reactions either OTT or non existent. The plot holes were obvious and annoying, and then the ending seemed rushed. Don't bother wasting 2 hours.
Judy (2019)
Renee is just superb
As a huge Judy Garland fan I was interested in what this had to offer. It mainly shows Judy in her last year, concentrating on her final performances in London, plus some flash backs during her Wizard of Oz years. Things are shown warts and all, but it wouldn't have worked without Renee Zellweger's superb performance. Not only does she do all the singing, but she captures all of Judy's nuances and mannerisms. Stunning.
The Woman in the Window (2021)
Don't waste your time
Stopped watching after 20 minutes as I found the characters implausible and annoying. Watching the ending the next day and it didn't get any better. Looked like it was written as a stage play as almost all the action look place in a couple of rooms of Anna's house. Why would she take in a border, especially one with such a chequered past, if she wasn't well? She accuses her neighbor of murder, and the police let him in her house to cross examine her? I could go one, and I won't even mention the ridiculous ending.
