Great movie until the lousy ending
2 April 2024
Warning: Spoilers
This was a pretty good movie, though it really only showed flashes of why Ed Harris's character is so bad, but then towards the end an innocent woman gets killed, at the ending showdown, it turns absurd, with the final scene being the other protagonist murdering the innocent woman we already thought was dead. So the movie ends with Ed Harris' character left alive but his daughter fleeing (I thought it was only her that could put him away?) and we are left having watched both main characters, whom we are supposed to care about, but try, and one is finally successful, in killing an innocent woman who's only sin was having a crush on one of them. I was sorry that I cared about either one, and I was left just feeling sorry for the poor dead woman.

Wow, incredibly well done.
6 September 2023
I was so scared they they couldn't maintain the good writing all the way through to the end of the final episode, but WOW did they nail it! Singularly amazing how they physically wove the ending scenes together... I have never seen anything like it.

I'm sorry, I don't want to write anything else about it, for fear of giving anything away, but it says that I have 234 characters left, so what am I supposed to do? I will just say that this is one of the best pulled off series endings that I have seen in a long time. Like Newhart Show long time. 49 characters to go, so yeah, you should, like, see it.

A beautifully made, slow-burn chase movie
7 May 2023
I loved this movie! It delves more into the native American's backstory and customs than the Robert Redford version did. It is a beautifully shot movie, showing big expansive desert views, with an excellent soundtrack keeping the mood set throughout the movie. To me, the musical accompaniment is as important to this movie as any character. Everyone does an excellent acting job, and it really makes the unfolding story believable the whole way through.

There are some bad reviews that complain about the lack of action, but this being a more faithful telling of a true story, there were no big, high body-count, gun fights to throw in. It's a simple, true story of two lovers on the run, being pursued by a group of different men who are there for different reasons. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

A movie where everyone is a worse shot than a stormtrooper
29 April 2023
Warning: Spoilers
The movie was ok, and it was great to see Tommy Lee Jones back in a western... they do a good job with the concept of Native American witches, and that women, white, Native American and Mexican, where traded with Comancheros. But there were so many dumb plot points (the daughter screaming at an inopportune moment) , and it was getting ridiculous how bad of a shot everyone was. They have a rifle, shooting at a person 100 ft away, and they miss them by several feet in some scenes?

I hate to say it, but if it had been a shorter movie, no more than 90 minutes, then it might have alright, but close to 2 hours and 20 minutes? Way too long for a movie this mediocre.

Sort of meandered to a weak ending.
21 August 2022
Warning: Spoilers
It started off about this conference about this belief, or however you want to classify it. Then cryptocurrency weasels in, which opens up the possibility of a dramatic clash between investment scam and people who don't believe in regulations, but then like a truck driving into a mud pit, the whole thing gets bogged down talking about the personal lives, and tragedies, of two of the main people. Eh... all in all, I should have spent the time watching something else.

When Big Things Go Wrong: House of Cards (2021)
Season 1, Episode 6

Needlessly sensationalist, with no final answer
19 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
This was the first episode of this series that I watched, and because of how lousy it was, I deleted the rest without watching them. Why spend 5 minutes on "how a single decision can cause a catastrophe", talk at length about the Costa Concordia, only to follow it up with "but that's not what happened here". Then why show it? They talk about bolts on the lower floors shearing, but they weren't the cause of the collapse... Then, to seal the fate of this lousy episode, they end with "we don't know who is to blame". Who signed off on this?

Watch it only for the musicians' interviews.
16 December 2021
Warning: Spoilers
The interviews are great, but their repeated claims to be the first to play these bands is just completely false. I know KROQ in Los Angeles was playing some of this music a year or two before LIR even switched formats, and a couple of other reviews point out other radio stations were as well. They claim they were the first to play Los Angeles' Wall of Voodoo??

Why would they claim something they knew to be false?

The last half hour this documentary switches into a history of the legal fight with the FCC, so if you were watching this for the music, it sort of abruptly stops there.

A good, well paced, gangster movie.
14 October 2021
I don't understand the negative reviews, I thought this movie was well paced, the dialog sections were not over-long, and the action sequences are spread throughout as the story unfolds. Better still, I didn't know how the movie was going to end, it could have gone several ways... Finally, I thought every actor did a great job creating their characters. What more do you want from a movie?

What an excellent movie!

I love a movie that you just watch unfold before you, no stereotypical Hollywood plot points, no "I saw that ending a mile away". And every actor does just an excellent job. What a lucky find!

An original take on the werewolf genre
8 June 2021
I liked this movie a lot; I liked the haphazardness of the supporting characters, all of those actor's performances, and I loved how unpredictable the movie was. There are a lot of complaints that the main character is over the top, and I felt that way at first as well, but I came to realize that the guy is really on the verge of losing it, even before the events of the movie, and those events push him past that. I really enjoyed the ride!

A very interesting story, well worth a watch!
22 May 2021
Warning: Spoilers
I enjoyed this documentary very much. They do feature Craig Carton a lot, telling his own story, but he is much more critical of his mistakes then anyone else that was interviewed. And he tells you at every step which were the stupid mistakes that he made. It was a compelling story.

As a sub-plot to his story: I never knew there there is a side of gambling where someone gamble's with other people's money like a sort of investment broker, with agreed upon percentage returns. So, like every good documentary, I came out of it learning a little bit more about the world, even if it's a part I will never come in contact with.

Lastly, I don't understand any of the bad reviews... the documentary tells you exactly what he was convicted of, and they don't say that it was a simple mix up of funds, and I don't know how it can be considered a puff piece, when he details mistake after mistake, screw-up after screw-up.

Let Him Go (2020)

Incredibly tense and very well done, but not believable
4 February 2021
Warning: Spoilers
Costner and Lane were just excellent, and the tension was palpable, however the bad guys were a little over-the-top. My main problem is, it just didn't make any sense that the bad-family's matriarch would even care about the not-her-grandson, much less escalate the situation to a deadly one. Her son obviously didn't care about his new step-son. Maybe if there had been more of a motivation given...

I don't understand the bad reviews, this was a great movie!

I won't give away any spoilers, but with all the Christmas movies that have been made, this manages to be an original story, and every single actor and actress does an excellent job with their roles!

A wonderful character study
3 October 2020
I thought this was an excellent character movie... no car chases or shoot-outs, just a story about two damaged people. Every character, even the supporting characters, are wonderfully acted. Just be ready for a serious, introspective movie.

It is an all-around beautifully done movie
29 September 2020
It is a compelling story, with every character well acted. It is visually beautiful, not only showing sunny Hawaiian skies, but beautiful dark, cloudy skies... not the typical Hawaiian postcard image. And it has an amazing soundtrack: it captures both the feel of Hawaii, while still managing to set the tone of the scene. Like Sideways, I like this movie more every time I watch it.

It was a great little unpredictable movie!
14 March 2020
I thought this was a nice oddball little story that so easily could have gone the predictable route with Matt Dillon's character, Imogene's dad, but it took several pleasant turns and kept me interested the whole way through. I really enjoyed the movie!

What a great movie!
21 February 2020
This was a wonderful, quiet... I hate to say "little" movie, because it has a really big cast, and everyone does a wonderful job. It's a great story, that isn't predictable, and isn't preachy. I don't want to over-sell it, but I highly recommend it!
