Better Watch Out (2016)
Well that wasn't what I expected...
I do not want to spoil anything. So I am going to try to explain why it's worth the watch. Do not read many reviews. Do not watch the trailer, just hit play like I did (I actually didn't check IMBD until I was about a half hour in).
You have your preteen with a crush on his babysitter. Things get weird when he starts trying to impress her. Then there is the home invasion and he takes opportunity to show her how brave he is.
Levi Miller gives an outstanding performance. They drop Easter eggs from Home Alone and A Christmas Story and probably others I missed.
You should know it is disturbing but well worth the 89 minutes you invest in it.
For a low budget Christmas suspense/horror, it's a fun wild ride. There is some dark humor tossed in. No real jump scares, but it suspenseful.
Christmas with the Campbells (2022)
Justin Long watched too much Yellowstone
Christmas with the Campbell's is not exactly your typical Christmas rom-com. Definitely not Hallmark level. We have some raunch and multitudes of sexual innuendo, but no actual sex/love scenes.
It does actually have a few funny moments but it's mostly forgettable. Well except for Justin Long's attempt at sounding like some weird cross between Yellowstone's John Dutton and Rip Wheeler to sound not so nerdy I guess. It's so distracting. He's a likable actor but not when he's trying as hard as he was here.
Saw afterwards that it was co-written but Vince Vaughn which I believe explains the sexual content and raunch.
The Invitation (2022)
It was OK
This movie starts out a bit slow, but captures the interest... It has some good jump scares. Great build up to the dinner scene with the big "reveal" -which I had already figured most of it out - at least the identity of the bride and groom - just not the why. From here on out, it gets a bit wild, you think perhaps it will end well but then it just kind of falls flat. It's also left a bit open to maybe a second movie?
They tried really hard with this and almost got a great thriller/horror movie ...BUT like another reviewer, they totally could have made this into a romcom. Think along the lines of the 80's campy Love at First Bite...
