Turning Point: The Bomb and the Cold War (2024)
Another fantastic netflix documentary
If there is one thing that Netflix does well, its documentaries. And wow was this one of the best i have ever seen. Detailed, insightful, interesting, deep, easy to follow, etc. I could go on and on. I laugh at some of these reviews saying it was too biased. Some people say it was biased in Russia's favor, and others in America's favor. That alone shows how stupid that comment is. The documentary could not have been less biased. It shows the real story from all sides, with criticisms going to all directions, not just one. Keep making more of these documentaries netflix, and from a history lover, thank you.
Oppenheimer (2023)
Biggest Nolan fan, ultimately dissapointed
After letting the movie marinate in my head for some time, i am dissapointed with it. Plain and simple. I am the biggest Nolan fan (Inception, Interstellar and TDK are in my top 5 all time), and this, plus the fact that almost everyone seems to be putting this movie through the roof, made me go in with more hype than i've had in a long time. Unfortunately, the movie is not what i expected. Not by a long shot. As a big fan of history, plus anything to do with atomic bombs/nuclear power, and everything the trailers led us to believe, i thought Nolan would create a fast paced, time distorted story around some of my favorite topics. Instead, time distorting is what i felt in the last hour of the movie, as it felt as though time was standing still and the movie dragged on until the end. The reason for this is that Nolan focuses 90% of this 3 hour movie on the events outside the creation of the bomb, with long drawn out court/interrogation scenes, making this feel more like a Strauss vs Oppenheimer than about the story of the father of the atomic bomb. For context, i love great dialogue in movies/TV. But this was too much and not interesting enough. The black and white honestly didnt land either. Also, after hearing for months about the explosion scene that Nolan created with no CGI, hearing him say this needed to be seen in Imax, hearing how this movie was gonna be a mindblowing display of sound/visuals, left me all the more dissapointed when the explosion scene lasted no more than 10 minutes. At first when it ended i thought, surely we will see more of it with the bombings of Japan, but no. That was it. Was the point of seeing it in Imax, only for those 10 (albeit great) minutes of the explosion scene? There is no need for Imax for 3 hours of dialogue. I also heard several people in th early screenings talk about a "horror" theme to this movie. Maybe those people had just finished watching Barbie and were not being objective. This movie did not have horror themes at all. It barely explores Oppenheimer's feelings after the bombs are released. Instead we see the final hour with more of Strauss vs Oppie. Let me also give some credit where its due. The cinematography, the sound, and the acting were great. Its what we expect of Nolan. But when you strip away all those things and look at only the story, its not great, instead its quite boring. Looking only at the story, i could have been fooled into thinking this was a documentary movie on netflix. Perhaps its on me, for going in with such high expectations for a Nolan movie. If you haven't seen it yet, lower your expectations.
Me Time (2022)
People need to be smarter
Haven't seen this movie. Im just laughing at people who genuinly thought one of these netflix movies with Kevin Hart would actually be good lol. C'mon now. Netflix has been spewing off atrocity after atrocity as excuses for movies for years. They all look, feel, and smell the same. Movies like Red Notice, Man from toronto, ridiculous 6, etc. You know the ones. People should be able to see from miles away that a movie like this was obviously gonna be trash. Time to get smarter and stop watching netflix trash movies. Maybe then they might actually take them seriously like they do shows/documentaries.
Old (2021)
Without a doubt the worst movie i've ever seen
Absolutely abysmal movie, surely it has to be a joke. The dialogue and the acting is so atrocious, there literally isnt a single scene in the whole movie that didn't make me cringe. Then there's the "cinematography" or should i say lack there of, as the whole movie is a convoluted mess of random camera shots pieced together by who i assume is M Night's 6 year old son. Plot holes/inconsistencies is an understatement. Please please please stay as far away as possible from this complete and utter disgrace.
Your Honor (2020)
So much potential - Dissapointing in the end
After watching the first episode i was instantly hooked. Great acting, great cinematography, and what seemed to be a great story brewing. Having just finished the finale, i can say this show landed flat on its face and did not deliver in line with the potential it had. I can overlook a couple small plot holes here and there, but to create this "world" around Michael's character, only to quickly wrap it up in 10 episodes, is just a massive disservice. Why even introduce the mother in law as senator, or slowly build the story of the soon to be mayor, or detective costello, or even the baxter family, when it was always going to be a limited series with just a few episodes. Seems like they could have taken this in so many directions after season 1, and that is the biggest dissapointment of all. Not to mention the finale itself, which has some glaring inconsistencies and left more questions than it did answers. What did Michael write in the note that he placed on the lawyers desk? What happens with detective costello or even Michael's gf/lawyer who now knows everything? They kept us in suspense all season before showing us that they foun out in the finale...and nothing happens. Why is Kofi's brother totally unbothered by the death of Kofi, but in the finale for convenience purposes, all of a sudden hes so mad that he buys a gun to kill his brothers supposed killer? Why build the drama with Fia and Adam loving each other despite there being a massive secret hidden from Fia, only for her to never even find out? I mean i could go on and on. So much potential that was ultimately never fulfilled.
Ad Astra (2019)
One of the biggest dissapointments i've ever seen
I came in to this movie expecting a pretty solid sci-fi flick starring one of my favorite actors ever, Brad Pitt. About halfway through the movie i realized however that this story was going absolutely nowhere and that not even a great twist at the end could fully save it. And yet, there wasnt even a twist! Just straight garbage from beggining to end! A plot so simple and childish you would think it was a middle school project. 90% of the movie is random scenes one after the other with no correlation to each other whatsoever, mostlt just for shock value, and it didn't even succeed at that. It also constantly kept trying to be/sound deep with Pitt's monologue, but in reality it was just a cheesy way to put out what the movie's exposition was, and at the same time it was incredibly cringe worthy. Just a terribly written story. Gets 3 stars just for its cinematography and solid shots. Other than that, trash. Avoid this film.
American History X (1998)
A lot of potential...
The way people talk about this movie, i really thought this was a hollywood masterpiece i had been missing out on for years. After finally having seen it, i can say it was certainly forgettable. The idea and subsequent story actually has a lot of potential, but it is ruined by the movies weird cinematography (black and white to show scenes in the past??) and quite frankly terribly dialogue and acting by everyone except for Norton, who i thought was the only solid actor. Not terrible, not great. Could have been so much better.
