Sex and the Biddy in Another City
29 May 2010
Warning: Spoilers
If you're a huge fan of the TV series, like me, and fairly fond of the first film, like me, I strongly advise you not to watch this film. It makes a mockery of the characters and everything this franchise once stood for. When the TV series kicked off we had these four independent smart sexy women living in New York City facing the same challenges all women face - romantically, sexually and professionally. The end of the series gave each of the ladies a satisfying happy ending, where each embarks on a different chapter in her life. The first film brought them back, three years later, and we got to see them in a new light - dealing with finally settling down into the lives they'd always wished for that didn't quite turn out as planned. The second film brings them back, 2 happy endings and 2 years later, and it tries to be different from the first film. Perhaps trying to improve upon the slightly depressing tone of the first film, Sex and the City 2 tries to be more funny, more flashy and more colorful. It holds on for dear life to this notion that these women's happy endings must not be disturbed. Their relationships, their success and their life stories seem to be etched in stone now, making any attempt to create some sort of conflict in the actual plot of the film seem contrived, unnecessary and mostly foolish. The characters are reduced to self-indulgent, materialistic bitches that fail to be satisfied by absolutely everything - since they have it all: the money, the clothes, the husbands. At some point in the film you go from loving these characters to just hating their rich behinds. I presume the makers of this farcical sequel thought they'd try to take our minds off from our sad little recession-hit lives by taking us on an all expenses paid trip with the girls to Abu Dhabi. What they seem to have completely lost is their storytelling ability and a way to reach out to the audience. (not to mention that the title of the series is Sex and the City, the city being New York City, but what can we do - it's an all expenses paid trip after all) While the makers of the film focus on delivering ridiculous puns and changing the ladies' outfits in every consecutive scene, no one seems to have been the slightest bit concerned that not only has the film lost the plot, it's lost touch with reality. Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte are no longer every woman. They are Carrie, Samantha, Miranda and Charlotte, the rich bigoted American feminists who have it all. They have become...celebrities. Are we supposed to be happy for them? For the sake of the show, yes. But do you really want to watch them rub it in your face along with awful puns and Liza Minnelli singing "Single Ladies" by Beyonce? No. I wish I hadn't.

Samantha Who? (2007–2009)

Absolutely charming!

After watching all 35 episodes I can honestly say that this show is one of my all-time favourites. The ensemble of cast that was put together works extremely well, allowing for plenty of interaction between the characters and an inexhaustible creative freedom to explore the individual personas of each of them. The female cast seems to be especially in touch with their roles, allowing the viewer to genuinely care about the characters while at the same time be able to identify with the variety of personal traits that are satired in each of them. The viewer also gets a chance to rediscover the world with amnesiac Samantha, who is forced to reexamine her friendships and her relationships and try to do the right thing, which is never as easy as it seems. To me, Samantha's best friends Andrea and Dena are the best thing about the show and watching the two of them interact has guaranteed hilarity ever since the Pilot. The writing is clever, packed with fresh and intelligent comedy that puts any show with a 'laugh track' to shame. As the show progresses, the timeline becomes more important to the story, the acting never disappoints and the cast ensemble proves to be an irreplaceable formula. Cancelling this show has got to be the stupidest thing ABC has ever done, and I will never lose hope that it will come back someday in some way.
