Dark Winds: Antigonish (2023)
Best episode yet, Antagonish
I love this series. This particular episode just busts wide open, for all the characters. I can't help but see the artist hand in the writing, specifically Steven Paul Judd. The words flow through the actors in a spontaneous way. All the details make for profound storytelling. So many moments, places, fraught with tension as the "demon astronaut " and Leaphorn go into deep psychological warfare. There are scenes that have tensions like Hitchcock. The old woman , the sheep's eyes, the depth and suspense, I don't want to do spoilers. Chee and the boy, the collar..good over evil. The movie, Shane comes to mind. The moon landing from the indigenous perspective. This is the episode that has a whole lot going on. Can't wait to see what happens next.
Hors de prix (2006)
Priceless, with spoilers.
Not sure how much of a comedy this is. It's more of a study of sugar Daddies and Mommas , hustlers of the French Riviera and their pathetic descent into meaningless consumption of luxury items. Every character is vulgar and materialistic. Lonely old rich people who toy with greedy purveyors of youth, their progress measured by how much they can get their marks to place on their credit card. The main character, Jean, starts out as a likable naïf, but soon he too is playing the Bernie Madoff inspired Ponzi scheme. It's a statement on everything that is wrong with an artless, greed driven social climb, of claws and emptiness.
Thor: Love and Thunder (2022)
Thor:Love and Thunder
Marvel Nation pleaser. Natalie Portman makes a stunning transformation. Christian Baio makes a great, complicated villain who has good reason to be angry and seeking revenge on the arrogant, out of touch Gods, who resemble present day oligarchs and their debauched, privileged outlook. Thor empowers the children to win in battle. Norse and Greek mythology clash, Russell Crowe as Zeus, ala Zorba the Greek. The two goats deserve their own movie. Melissa McCarthy, as Hella, is divine. Matt Damon in a black wig, as Loki impersonator, is strangely fascinating.
