Invasion: Orion (2021)
It really is that bad of an episode.
Caspars storyline is so shallow it hurts. A perfectly innocent child who has health problems and an abusive father. The childs antagonist is a prodigy in sociopathic manipulation and uses it to inflict pain and misery on Caspar and thus fill the mold of perfect evil.
The main families story runs parallel: The mother is a perfect innocent who went above and beyond to take care of her kids and husband while the husband lies, cheats, and tries to abandon them in the middle of a catastrophe. Their plot in the episode is a repeat from before: 'The father cares. Oh no wait he's actually just selfish and waiting for his chance to leave.'
No surprise to find out another characters father left them in violent, traumatic fashion. So what's the takeaway? Old men are evil? Fathers are bad? Children need protection from them?
This episode even has a beautiful scene of a father lamenting the loss of his young daughter. Yet I can't help but think there's a writer out there who feels like the only child unhurt by their father is the one who died before they met them.
Monarch: Legacy of Monsters: The Way Out (2023)
I spy 3 Deus Ex Machina
I could talk at length on what's bad, but there were two good moments:
While in the truck May and Cate are assuming the worst about certain people when Kentaro shares a story which derails the "All those people are evil" moment. The show has had these open-minded calls before and they always shine for me.
Another good moment is when May/Kiersey seems to genuinely mimic the cadence of Kentaro/Ren.
The rest of the episode wanders between decent, bad, and worse. A lot of the writing is bad enough to make the episode embarrassing to watch: A character physically blacking out for no reason other than to justify back-story scenes? Starving cats that aren't territorial and exist peacefully as deus ex machinas (twice). 1d soldiers. Surprise another deus ex machina.
Did I miss any deus ex machina? I don't know... Watch and find out, I guess.
The Old Man (2022)
Overrated
Some really good things: acting, cinematography, premise, atmosphere, etc. The problem is when it comes to a spy thriller, you need cleverness, but The Old Man has too many plot holes. When super spies behave as if untrained, you no longer have a spy thriller. This is an action flick, at best.
Space Force (2020)
Looks good
Unfortunately, the best thing about the movie is how it looks. Nice, bright, clear. The cinematography is great. Love whatever those video wizards are doing. The content, on the other hand, is insultingly bad. Jokes are bad (drop ice cream in expensive car being a punch line bad). Maybe try watching it on mute.
