Let me give you some good points on this hilarious true indie film!
29 August 2019
Another review asked "What did you expect with a title like Shark Exorcist?" HaHaHaHaHa! This movie is Tony the Tiger GRRRRRRREAT!!

This is a TRUE indie film.. Do you ever see "indie films" with million dollar + budgets? Indie means independent, small, like a local band. This is a real indie film meaning challenges happen. Proper video, sound equipment, locations and so on can be expensive and sometimes people keep on trucking with resources are available and they DID make a movie and get it into distribution AND people are watching it. This is success.

The music was composed by a guy named Tony Proffer. His stuff is showing up more and more in indie films and is really great. He uses really spooky tones with great composition similar to what we would hear in bigger budget direct to video VHS rental store titles from the 80s. Very genuine.

Shark Exorcist made use of great seemingly free locations. Filming inside a hospital, The Parthenon replica, a county fair, a lake, probably a friends house/pool and an aquarium.

Hilarity Highlights "I like to get wet" HaHaHaHAHAhAHaHAHAHAHAHAHA (when this happens it is awkward and hilarious. Whoever wrote that deserves a free cup of coffee.)

In closing, if you want to see a great real indie film, here you go and enjoy!

CarousHELL (2016)
10/10
Balanced hilarity and horror
10 April 2019
Warning: Spoilers
I wont give away any spoilers here so I'm not going to say exactly how this happens, but there will be ninja stars, and when you see it, you're going to laugh!

Caroushell is another great indie film out on WildEye Releasing which consistently puts out great TRUE indie films. The camera work was great as well as the audio, editing and all mechanical aspects of the film were done in a professional level of quality (proper focus, recording with a boom mic, proper editing and so on. The practical effects were very well done and comparable to a movie with a higher budget.

"As of 2014, Sundance reported that the average independent film budget was $750,000" (per a 2018 article found on eleven04) To me, "indie" means a group of friends get together, take time off of their day jobs, work off of their own saved funds/run up some credit cards for props, crew, equipment and so on. They do the best film they can in a LIMITED TIME WITH A LIMITED BUDGET, as in they haven't broken into the mainstream of achieved the ability to do filmmaking as their day jobs yet. Films produced for 20 to 30k (or less) seems truer indie in that context. While I did not see any budget information for CarousHell on imdb, it would seem that this film was created somewhere along those lines.

Soft Matter (2018)
10/10
I bought this on dvd and watched it streaming. A creative surreal sci fi dream
4 April 2019
Soft Matter was an amazing mix of filmmaking techniques.

From the very 80s VHS tape static look in the intro, blinking titles and such, it was an homage to what would be seen in something like an 80s informercial/work instruction/safety science video and the music was very good/retro/comparable to something from Kung Fury. When the film kicks in, the footage changes to high res and looks and though it was shot in 1080p or possibly 4k but I couldn't tell because my tv only displays 1080p. Good camera work. Seems either dolly tracking or a slider was used for some shot and the audio was recorded well. There is one scene in which Kish and Haircut are positioned a good distance away from the camera sitting on a wall and the audio is still very clear so it is clear that the actors had a proper mic nearby, possibly behind them. Part of the reason I am reviewing the film is that I had read a negative review that said it looked like it was shot on a camcorder and the audio levels were off and compared it to a throwaway junk movie. It seems that whoever wrote that review was either just and overly negative person looking for an outlet to express some pent up personal frustration, or had never actually made a movie and did not understand the mechanics of what actually go in to making a film. The camera used obviously had a pro non consumer level manual focus lens which was discernable by the clear focus in the foreground and the blurred background showing proper depth of field. Soft matter also has some comedic animated sequences which were very well done. Lots of bright colors in the movie which I really liked. The story is a bit of a horror sci fi, and is balanced out with some comedic dialogue which helps the film flow along at a nice pace. The creature makeup was also very well done. I would recommend Soft Matter to any fan of indie horror/sci fi.
