Planet in Peril (2007)
Get Involved, Global Warming is a Fact!
The documentary isn't over loaded with scientific facts, and concepts that are hard to grasp. Looking at individual's's in situations made tough by global warming, makes the issue very real.
From dying polar bears in the north, to a nun being shot by rain forest destroyers, to a boy getting sick with cancer from a local chemical factory, the documentary is very effective.
Films like these should be shown as much as possible to as many people as possible. It is more than another "nature" show, and it inspires people to make a difference.
"Be the change to wish to see in your world"
Message to Love: The Isle of Wight Festival (1996)
a time-piece
this is a great piece of the late 60's early 70's festival scene. It is a real moving tribute to a more free wheelin' lifestyle, being that it is one of the last major festivals.
Although, a lot of the festival turned out badly (cops being uptight about drugs, violence in the audience, performers threatening not to play because of money, on-stage fires, etc.), an underlying message of hope and peace prevails.
The film shows the dying nature of the ideal "hippy" spirit and marks a change in time from the revolutionary late 60's to the more straight laced 70's.
Performances by Joni Mitchel, The Who, The Doors, Joan Baez, etc. make it a great concert to watch.
Sin City (2005)
stay away from sin city
this movie is horrible. i can understand why many people would find it interesting, an interpretation of a comic book, a lot of action, and a fast paced story, but these are not the qualities that define a good film. The movie is a trashy crowd pleaser which holds nothing valuable behind its many special effects. it clearly demonstrates the trend of more and more modern main stream films as they fall down the slope from art work to trash. the movie focuses on characters with super human strength, mainly so they can be shot more and more without dying. the film is extremely bloody, violent, and in some senses sexually explicit. this is not to say that these themes should be stayed away from, but when a film takes violence and sex and uses them as tools for mass entertainment instead of for a greater purpose or in a way that adds character, style, and meaning to the film, then the filmmaker has failed at his craft. Overall, this film should be looked upon as a blunder in film-making and it is a shame that this world has lost enough sense and morality to put this film in the top 250.
Refuge of the Roads (1984)
Classic Joni concerts and home-movies
Refuge of the Roads is a Joni Mitchell concert. Ms. Mitchell serves as singer, songwriter, guitar player, piano player, as well as the director of this film. An interesting combination of home movies/on the road documentary footage and concert footage. The actual songs have a very 1980's rock sound to them and feature other players as well as Joni Mitchell. This concert does not feature Joni as much as a folk musician as it does a rock/hard rock 80's singer. The DVD does include a nice selection of still photos set to music from the film. The movie also includes clips from Koyaanisqatsi which fit in nicely with the music. Overall, the film is not bad. It shows another side of Joni Mitchell as she changes from 1960's folk music to 1980's rock. The songs she plays are classics, just done differently. Should be seen by Joni Mitchell fans although not one of her best performances.
Joni Mitchell: Painting with Words and Music (1998)
Great example of Joni's talent!
This is a concert that features one of folk rock's most profound and important figures. Joni Mitchell is an amazing singer and artist who draws on experiences ranging from her travels across the country to the time she spent in the Canadian wilderness. This concert is a testimony towards Joni's talent. A must see my any Mitchell fan. The music played in the performance spans over four decades. Joni Mitchell performs in an intimate setting and plays with a jazzy light feel found in albums like Hejira. Gram Nash is also present at this concert Joni's paintings are shown off too. A great great performance. Although the concert is more recent, Joni has not lost any skill and her voice has remained unique.
Planet of the Apes (2001)
THE 2001 Planet of the Apes does not compare!
The Planet of the Apes that came out in the late sixties was an incredible film that deals with many social, religious, and political issues. The new remake of this film is awful. The new Planet of the Apes does not have a metaphorical level and it is sheer action just for actions sake. Furthermore, the new film is not exciting or entertaining. I am not sure why the film industry would invest so much money in a film that has already been made. I think that if the original was good, there is not need for a remake! It seems that in this modern era, many film makers have either run out of ideas or sold out. They have begun to remake old films instead of creating new ones. This seems like a waste of talent, money, and technology to me.
