A Slog
12 September 2020
To be transparent, I didn't make it all the way through this film. I tried, I really did, but I gave up -- something I very rarely do -- because it was such a hard slog. Aiming at times to be artsy, it just comes across as inept. I thought it would be an interesting view into the culture of nudism; I don't know what it's about, but it's definitely not about that. Awful.

The Witches (1990)
The Witches Holds its Own
21 August 2005
THE WITCHES is a delight, staying true to the spirit of Roald Dahl's book and its slightly subversive blend of humour and creepiness. Following a novel study, I watched this with my class and the students were completely engaged. They were forgiving of the changes made to the story (recognizing that the change of medium from novel to film often involves changes in storytelling) and had only glowing praise for it. They cringed at all the right places and laughed in all the right spots. As for the (cynical adult) criticism of the effects, my students had no trouble suspending disbelief and getting taken in by the Creature Shop's superb work. All of this, and Anjelica Huston, too.
