I Am Legend (2007)
Different than I was led to believe...
While the plot was fantastic and flashbacks were masterfully placed, overall this film was much more intense than I expected. In several scenes I was left cowering into my friend's shoulder and regretting bringing my younger sister along.
I felt that the terror was too intense for a PG-13 rating, and I felt very bad for a child of about 9 who ran crying from the theater about half an hour into the movie. This was definitely not a film for children or people who suffer from nightmares.
There are clever nuances which hint at psychological processes deeper than I would have expected from such a violent film, but these were, for the most part, left unexplored.
I give this film a 6 out of 10 for the hints at deeper meaning and the vague yet profound character development. Also, the effects were convincing and the action positively gripping, if a little too intense for my taste.
Lost: ? (2006)
Twists like no other!
In this episode, Locke and Eko go searching for the "?" symbol that we saw during the lock-down on a previous episode. Michael, having shot Ana Lucia and Libby, struggles with his actions as Libby inches closer to death.
The most interesting thing about this episode (I think). Is during the commercial break. Locke and Eko find a hatch under the plane that killed Boone in season one, and a new training video ends with "Copyright, The Hanso Foundation, 1989" In a following commercial break, a rather bizarre and nondescript commercial advertises "The Hanso Foundation" (a planted commercial), and the website advertised (www.sublymonal.com) leads the visitor through a world of information about life on the outside of LOST's storyline. A must see for all fans!
Aquamarine (2006)
It wasn't great
The theater was positively empty when I saw it, and though I enjoyed the space, I could understand the reason quickly enough. The movie appealed greatly to its target audience of pre-adolescent girls, though slightly older girls in the mid-to-upper teens will in all likelihood feel positively disgusted at the obsessive, drama queen attitudes of the characters, if only because it reminds all of us how silly we once were. Overall, I think the movie is slightly unbalanced with several fairly attractive actresses and only Jake McDorman (hot as he is) to balance out the raging tide of estrogen. Chick Flicks need more pretty guys to appeal to female audiences.
Cry Wolf (2005)
marvelous!
so good! It keeps you saying "wait... what??" and holds the top slot in my horror movie hall of fame.
That main guy is a real Cutie and the girl is a great actress! Its thought element bore slight similarity to "The Village" in that every time you think you have it figured out, you think you're wrong and change your prediction every five minutes or less.
Tiny little unexpected plot elements kept the film interesting, and the final twist will leave you in shock.
Like most scary movies, there will always be someone whispering "You idiot!! Don't go in there!" or "Don't open the door!" or even "Run, freak, Run!" It will be one of those films I will see over and over in efforts to distinguish between all the little bits of foreshadowing and throw-offs for plot twists. A definite must-see for those who think horror films are too predictable!
