Creed II (2018)
A lot of missed opportunities
The film starts out great, with 2 major boxing matches, and a third boxing match in the beginning, along with 2 training montages. The issue with the film is I feel like a lot more time could've been spent between Stallone and drago, their conflict and rivalry was almost non-existent. The pacing is also off, the film spends the first hour and a half really well with the story of creed being depressed and trying to be "reborn" after raising his kid. Then a hard cut to a 5 minute montage and off to the boxing finale with the last half hour. The movie almost felt like the director was running out of time so he quickly rushed the last bit. A lot more story about him being born, Stallone could've taught creed old boxing tricks from fighting his opponents father, he could've trained alongaide him since rocky has stake in the fight too, learned how to be patient and strategic etc the film just rushed his entire "reborn" phase which would've been the best part of the film and added stakes to it. The finale was incredibly short, with your typical "boxer looks like he's going to lose but oh wait" method. A lot more drama, entry into the ring, more on his heavyweight career.. it just seems the film went slow on unnecessary parts and went extremely quickly on the best parts of the film. Overall the film was good and definitely not bad, just a lot of missed opportunities for a somewhat-sequel to rocky IV. But I wouldn't feel bad skipping out on it and just watching the first either.
That '90s Show (2023)
It's like someome revitalized that 80s show
I think if you were able to magically get the entire cast back and come up with a reason why they are all in the same town/city, it would've been possibly a hit but risky. The original ran way too long, and the jokes got less clever and more cheap, s8 was awful. So why they thought this would work is beyond me.
I love red and kitty being back, I could almost watch a new show just starring them.. in fact I think I'd prefer it. Seeing the original cast get together brings back nostalgia and fun, but the instant the show turns over to what is supposed to be the main cast, the show is just rehashing what that 70s show did. The first episode is even a repeat of the famous 70s show episode where they come across a keg but have no tap. The positive note is at least the actors are actual teenagers and not mid 20-somethings, but it's just overplayed. The first couple seasons of70s show really eased it in, and didn't have a joke every 10 seconds. The main character was sarcastic and talked back to his old fashioned dad. This one, I really hate the main cast. It reminds me of when they attempted that 80s show.. plus no matter how hard the cast tries, people are only going to think of the original cast or be distracted by how they look like kids(appropriate but unrelatabke for a large audience)
Down Periscope (1996)
Moderately amusing as a background movie but ultimately forgettable
The movies plot itself is average and decent but the characters are just silly one dimensional stereotypes that don't get much characterization. The humor reminds me of something my old 65-70 year old stepdad(roughly 40 at the time of the movie) who's a huge military buff and goofball comedy lover would have loved, and no that's not a compliment. The comedy is just jokes like a guy getting electrocuted (this happens like 6 times), a woman on board(wait and she's not a stripper is a tagline), a wasted rob Schneider, a chef that says maybe one line, a rebel who doesn't really do much other than make a few "against authority" remarks, Harland williams who other than existing makes "funny noises". All the characters are a waste, I only seem to remember Kelsey grammar, who did a decent job breaking from Frasier and being comedic. There's a random scene where everyone inexplicabley has pirate outfits.. the movie just doesn't make much sense and the jokes that work are, like I said, something an old man or someone who's 30-40 back in the 90s mightve found hilarious. Lauren Holly's character is really just there as a sex object. The movie isn't too unrealistic or off the wall, and it's a decent enough movie to enjoy if you caught it at a movie in the park type event or at someone's house but it's not going to have you cracking up in tears. It's just very average.
Spider-Man: No Way Home (2021)
Blinded by cameos
The cameo appearances(and there are a lot) is blinding everybody watching this. I've been dying to see Spiderman 1 cameo's and a continuation of that story forever, it was my childhood movie. But the plot, writing was so generic and uncreative, not to mention Dr strange pulled a plot rabbit out of his hat every time he needed to move the plot along. It also didn't help that the story involved peter parker, who is a grade A student and scientist on par with characters from the big bang theory, but is not a genius capable of creating cures for every villain that work instantly in less than a week. I also hated how the movie relied on old famous lines from the old movie or how they tried to break the 4th wall and joke about the villains back stories a lot. The drama and seriousness that I love in movies was all gone and replaced by cheese characters that I found annoying(this is the first time Holland Spiderman movie I've seen) and horrible scripts for my beloved childhood. It was entertaining at least, but the whole fight was chi anyway I couldn't really tell what thwas going on anyway. I did like the villains being a hit different but I think they could've cut a lot of stuff out and given the villains more screentime so they had a reason to be eveil, its like they were evil for no reason.
Abbott Elementary (2021)
Tired recycled ideas, even within its own scripts
I tried a few episodes. It's nice for a background show but the whole "we are interviewing you"/the office camera POV is tired and trudged. Even the direct eye contacts with the camera or the awkward faces they make are all the same as the office. The teachers in inner city idea is new and interesting but the jokes they make all seem to cycle around teaching which gets old very fast, as they are all things we've heard before. Also every character in the show seems to have a love interest with the new teacher and he makes the same facial expressions each time. I find the older teacher funny how stern she is, but the character giant a main character, and the ones that are just aren't very interesting. It's better than your typical ABC sitcom but it's nothing I'd tune in for.
The Gift (2000)
Great movie but ending was rushed
The movie has a stellar cast, awesome director, and lighting that makes the movie look like a 70/80s horror movie. It has a lot of great drama and acting.
Without spoiling the movie, the movie kind of rushes to the end with simple visions and treatments. While there are some twists and unexpected story pieces, it just seems like everything fell in her lap at the end. The movie is rather short, I think an extra half hour could've been added to give the film extra mystery, focus more on the characters such as her personal life with kids or how she became a psychic, which is instead told through exposition.. I just left feeling like I wanted much more. The film works great as is, but I think it could've been made into a classic just by adding runtime and diving into all her personal life details, adding mystery and having a bit more mystery/detective like work at the end. Her visions were nice and creepy but I think the movie would've benefited from her following them like clues a bit more. The story became more like a thriller rather than a mystery which is fine, I just feel it was missing key pieces. Still a good watch for a one time viewing, it definitely pulled me in.
Ronnie Coleman: The King (2018)
By the end I learned less about Ronnie's bodybuilding and more about his wife and kids.
The director dips a toe in the interesting pool of subject matter, then drags it out and swims in dull, conversation with hardly enough footage
Ronnie Coleman has a pretty interesting life story.. and you think putting together a documentary about his fall into being crippled with commentary from several other bodybuilders would be interesting.. but it's not. Mainly because the direction the director takes is all wrong.
I feel like the director got just 20 minutes of footage, and added fillers to meet a deadline and make the film.
To make my point, there is a lot of fillers in the documentary like Ronnie asking his kids after he picked them up from daycare if they brought a jacket and having a discussion. Then there's an entire scene I skipped where the wife is talking about her life and the kids personalities. The backstory of Ronnie is told from photos that pop up while Ronnie is narrating from his house. Then all the interesting moments like the Olympia contests are skipped over or show very little footage, or quick camera shots of his metroflex gym. They also show the interviewers talking a lot to fill more time as well. Example: "I heard you have your own gym". Ronnie:"yeah wanna see it?" Interviewer" "yeah let's see it" then a minute footage of them walking to the gym.. but then 10 seconds of footage of the actual gym. The order of scenes could've been inrpoved too. You learn an important detail in the beginning of the film before the film leads up to it. The story of Ronnie is way more interesting. Here is how it could've been improved:
Focus a lot more on the surgeries and his weakness.
Focus on the Olympia contests
Show videos of his police station or more videos of him working on the force
Show videos of his hometown or visit locations with Robbie, rather than talking about them.
Ask better questions, like "did you do steroids?"
Rather than learning about his supplement line business, are there any pitfalls or drama regarding this? The film steps into it but then drags it's foot out.
The interviews are scattered and boring as hell.. streamline this and make it better.
Add some music or something.
Add footage!
Show more of metroflex, machines, other people using weights, etc.
by the end of it I learned very little and felt like I wasted my time. Luckily I skipped the scenes of his wife talking about what her kids like to do for fun or what she does to spare some time. I learned what I could've learned on Wikipedia in about 5 -10 minutes.
Bonus round . Actual scene from the movie that proves it's dullness paraphrased:
Ronnie: I ate pizza at work because it was free. I got tired of eating pizza. I called up the burger place and asked if they were tired of burgers. The said yeah.. I said I was tired of pizza. I went to go work at the burger place for free burgers.. I got sick of eating burgers. I called up the chicken place next door, hey you tired of eating free chicken? Yeah I'm tired of eating free burgers. So I went to work at the chicken place.. this scene is actually much longer and dragged out.
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia: Underage Drinking: A National Concern (2005)
The episode that defines the show
During the first season every episode was based directly on a controversial issue. While most episodes still do this, it is not a focusing point. This episode focuses on underage drinking and dating.
The first season in most shows is usually a little rough and he characters are underdeveloped or don't have exaggerated personalities. This episode rebels from most first season episodes and is very clever, smart, and controversial. It also is the first episode which really starts to introduce and emphasize the individual character's personalities, as all of them were pretty much generic young adults. Dee becomes a hopeless high school wannabe to relive her glory days, Dennis talks about dating minors and finds himself dating an 18 year old,Charlie brings together young couples and listens to all the teens problems, and Mac walks around jealous and bitter(mac's personality before he became a religious, possibly gay white trash karate lover). All the characters have their own role and with their personalities it really enhances this episode, especially with all the jokes about teens, and serving them illegally for a profit and dating a chunk of them.
The show gets edgy for the first time, which the show doesn't do often unless it shows odd sexual scenes. It is seen as negative by most viewers but it gives it that TV-MA edge that the show needed. Dee is even seen with a dildo about to watch porn and dry humps an 18-year old. This episode is a great one to start from and still has those clever funny moments that you don't quite get with new episodes which feature jokes that are buried under the exaggerated outrageous personalities of the characters.
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia: Frank's Brother (2011)
There had to be one bad episode
This episode is actually well made and very clever. It focuses solely on frank's teenage years to his young adult years explaining his life at a stereotypical 70's nightclub with his brother. The episode has funny moments after the back story ends but mainly the episode falls short in these ways:
.Frank, with the exception of Dee, is one of the lesser funny characters so focusing on him is a challenge altogether, plus Frank was very well behaved and thought things out rationally for the most part up until he lived with Charlie
.the gang makes an appearance only at the beginning and end
.There are no jokes to earlier moments in the series, which is a missed opportunity.
.Finally, there are hardly any "jokes" other than a few word plays and a 60 year old Frank playing an 18 year old Frank. The episode is very serious to the point where it becomes almost like a drama, and the comedy that is there is situational humor that is few and far in between and mild at best. If this had more comedy and focused on Frank's life while raising his kids it would've been a much better episode.
There is always that one bad episode and while this episode is not necessarily bad, it'd definitely the least funny and the "avoidable" one of the bunch.
