Animal (2023)
Love it or Hate it...can't stop thinking about it
This movie evokes strong sentiment - even when you hate it, you can't stop thinking about after the fact. Director has a knack for creating these crazy Alpha Male characters (Kabir Singh, Animal). Animal was Ranbir's best role of his lifetime, just like Kabir Singh was for Shahid Kapoor.
Good:
- Excellent songs, a wide variety of themes and singers...all hummable
- Great acting by most artists. The way Ranbir kapoor acts, you would hate him but that was his persona (erratic, unpredictable, loud) and he did an amazing job with that.
- Some interesting story elements (Kailash, Zoya, Abrar) but all short cameos...would have loved to see the writer create more interesting strategies around them.
Bad:
- Editing was very jerky. There were many transitions in story which were very abrupt (Ranbir going to US and back, heart transplant/recovery, etc)
- The movie was unnecessarily long, and they could have easily removed lots of unnecessary scenes - stupid long fight in the hotel, underwear related dialogues (did anyone find them funny?), long fight scene with Abrar
Ugly:
- No policeman in the entire movie. No law and order in India or even Scotland. Go anywhere public and just shoot and kill with no repercussions or fear
- Very poor depiction of female characters. Many of those scenes can be cut off with no effect.
- Stupid violence, blood, gore which could be shown elegantly.
Is this a movie you would recommend anybody - NO. Great potential wasted by the director by going a bit too extreme.
Bholaa (2023)
Nonsensical Action, no Story, Worst movie of the year
This is definitely the worst movie of the year. After Runway 34 I was impressed with Ajay Devgn's direction. Bholaa turned out to be complete opposite and horrible.
There were so many scenes where the bad guys were just using hand. Where were their guns, axe, sticks, etc. They had guns but didn't use it against the hero (may be it was their moral code :-) Action was so artificial and mind-numbing (people flying with one hand, nothing happens to the hero, but one kick from him just eliminates the bad guy, etc). I am surprised how anyone could tolerate this.
The story line was so shallow with no smart moves other than stupid and repetitive action. Please save your time and go watch Runway 34 again.
Criminal Justice (2019)
Good basic plot, unnecessary jail scenes
This was a good plot and interesting mystery, but the pace is very slow.
The worst part was the jail scenes which were extremely boring and dragged endlessly...at one point I even stopped watching due to those, then later decided to forward through the jail scenes. They had no connection to the plot, and were just frustrating to sit through.
It looks like there are 2 more seasons, and each of them follow the same model. Decent murder plot, then one of the characters are in jail (women's jail and juvenile jail in next parts) and all of the jail parts are unnecessary and unrelated to the plot, and frustrate the users.
Mr Director, if you plan any more seasons, please eliminate the jail and just focus on detective and court work.
Qala (2022)
SAD film...will make you depressed for sure
Every frame of the film where Qala appears, she is either crying, shivering, or about to cry. This was the saddest film I have seen where nothing good happens.
Artificial scenes, pathetic story line, and extremely depressing. The vibe and art direction of the film was also designed to support this tragic tone. All of the scenes were dark/dingy or snowy (can't remember a single scene with sunshine).
A good film is supposed to engage the audience with a mixture of emotions but this film only portrayed one emotion consistently throughout. The same story could have been presented with a realistic portrayal of characters, but alas this was too artificial...
Gets few stars for good music :-)
Crash Course (2022)
Darker, poorer version of Kota Factory
Good depiction of coaching and hostel life of Kota. Mostly good characters, and decent acting and directing. Felt very similar to Kota factory, but second half of the series became dark (and annoying). And some parts were unnecessary which made the overall story weak.
Feedback to directors - lot of unnecessary characters and subplots, which should have been edited out to make the rest of the story more coherent and tighter:
- Shashank's brother
- Panther gang
- Ganja kachori
If you make season 2, please focus more on the student life and how students compete and collaborate with each other and less on the shenanigans of RJ and Shashank. Show how other good teachers (besides AK) teach Chemistry and Math.
Aarya (2020)
Sushmita great...everything else frustrating.
Sushmita was amazing in this show - her calm demeanor and deep voice was just perfect.
But everything else about the show was frustrating. The director kept killing people for no real reason. The series got boring and depressing as it went along. The finale of season 1 was somewhat decent as it wrapped things up.
The season 2 was bad from the beginning to the end, so avoid that even if you like season 1. Even Sush looked tired and dull in season 2.
Human (2022)
Horrible and depressing
The idea was unique which intrigued me. But everything about the show was annoying - bad acting, artificial characters (specially Dr Gauri Nath and Roma Ma), and overall sadistic direction which will surely leave a foul taste in your mouth.
Please avoid and something happier and more realistic.
Toofaan (2021)
Good first half, really bad second half
The first half of the movie is decent and interesting. The second half - from the moment the heroine is in the boxing federation office it all goes downhill from there. Unnecessary melodrama and forced scenes...which ends in a predictable finale. The second half spoils the overall impression of the movie.
If you want to watch it, just sit through the first half, enjoy the acting of Farhan Akhtar, Paresh Rawal, etc, and feel satisfied.
Avoid the drag of the second half and watch Dangal or Sultan instead :)
La casa de papel (2017)
Great idea and gripping for first 2 seasons...but season 3/4 dragged on
The series was intriguing and very absorbing initially. The mind games between the police and Professor were exciting and wow-inducing. All the meticulous planning that they went through was amazing and kept you on the hooks.
But the parts where they showed infighting between the thieves was way overdone. Everyone was pointing guns at everyone else, and completely botched the beauty and preciseness of the plan...and made the audience cringe.
And Season 3 and 4 overdid all the internal discussions and interactions - there was much less time dedicated to the interaction between the police and thieves. If they could somehow edit out most of the non-heist related planning (example: the wedding scenes with Denver, and the stupid dialogues over lunch, etc), and the stupid infighting during the heist (round robin of "now I am in charge", Arturo scenes, the whole Gandia fighting), those seasons could also have been great.
My recommendation to other viewers - do watch this series as this is probably the best of heist planning you will ever see (better than Mission Impossible movies). Just fast forward meaningless scenes showing personal interactions.
