Can't be beaten!
14 June 2006
Warning: Spoilers
Considering this film is nearly 20 years old, it still remains as good as ever. Michael Douglas, Glenn Close, and Anne Archer are all to be commended for making this film realistic and believable.

From the outset, the film runs at a good pace and is compelling viewing. I still find it quite eerie during both the bunny boiling scene and also when Alex has cut her wrists whilst Madam Butterfly is playing in the background.

The scene where Dan and Alex have sex in the sink (although it looks more to me like on the worktop/counter) makes the film both believable and shows the passion and excitement that makes their affair more realistic to the viewer.

Overall still an excellent film and definitely one to watch.

What was that all about?!!

Warning: Spoilers
Well, what can I say, apart from disappointing.

Although this version of the book took on a different slant, and referred to characters missing from the 1979 version,I personally do not think it was for the better.

Unfortunately, I found Rob Lowe's performance as Ben Mears unconvincing, Donald Sutherland seemed to have been taking some form of medication and made Straker seem more like Father Christmas than terrifyingly chilling, Susan was unrecognisable from the book or 1979 version (now working as a waitress in her family's café rather than teaching at Holly Elementary), and as for Matt Burke, what can I say apart from his part obviously made the film politically correct.

The ridiculous upbeat version of 'Painted Black' at the end of the film was the worst thing and made a mockery of the whole story, it would have been far better to stick with something chilling that would have done this version justice.

I didn't find this a compelling film to watch like the 1979 version and it seemed to miss some of the 'edge of the seat' ingredients which the first one had.

I always thought a new version would be different, however in my opinion was certainly not better. All of the characters in the original were more believable and better cast.

I just live in hope that the next version is not only horrifying, chilling and full of suspense, but manages to be more true to the book.

I still think David Soul rocks, sorry Rob!

Excellent, and a classic horror!
21 July 2005
Although not entirely true to the book, this mini-series is a brilliant and compelling film to watch. Originally shown in the early 80's in 2 parts by the BBC, David Soul is excellent in his role of Ben Mears, and of course the unforgettable James Mason's portrayal of 'Straker'is thoroughly chilling.

Unfortunately, this version is now looking a little dated with regards to the special effects, but is still one of the best horror films that I have ever watched, and I still watch it over and over again - worth it as David Soul still makes me melt! I wish it could be updated with new effects, but with the same cast (although I could volunteer for the role of Susan!!)
