Monsieur Spade (2024)
Maddening!
So maddening. I doubt I will ever attempt to watch another show on AMC. Ever. This series was cut to pieces with commercials, I counted 13 in a row at one point. At least one scene in each episode was truncated to accommodate them. It was really jarring.
With closed captioning on, the sound cues ran over the subtitles. It was hard enough understanding the narrative, with its time jumps and French language, without being able to understand the dialog.
Although it was certainly attractive to look at, dark and moody, it didn't seem very coherent. I love Noir, and Hammett, and really wanted to like it, but it left me cold.
Scotty and the Secret History of Hollywood (2017)
Mostly a yawner
You would think wisdom would come with age. Nope. With clandestine sex and movie stars, you'd think an interesting documentary would be created. Wrong again.
I fast forwarded through the last third of this rather dull documentary about a very unlikable man.
Madam Satan (1930)
Highly improbable
It's almost two movies in one: the action before the airship, which pokes along and once onboard, when it goes a bit haywire.
The Madam Satan dress alone is worth the price of admission. With its flames and sequins and the "cut out" designs and its crazy spikes sleeves, it is just too much.
Jamboree! (1957)
A real stinker, and yet-
Barely a plot and truly terrible acting, not to mention the super cheap stage sets. And, yet, some of the performances are so awesome. Both Buddy Knox, Fats Domino, Jerry Lee Lewis, Joe Williams! What's not to like?
This Is Pop: The Brill Building in 4 Songs (2021)
Inadequate
This episode was neither well researched nor well paced. Most of the interviewees added neither depth not perception. And there was way too much Andy Kim.
Overall it lacked direction, as if it were assembled under a rapidly approaching deadline and lost its original intention.
