coming of age with music that rocks
12 February 2024
I absolutely loved this movie. We get to watch the young woman - older teen, it seems, perhaps in a trade school -become more sure of herself and her place in society. The change is manifested without fanfare, by use of subtle clues that call for the viewer to be paying attention. Nice of the director to not play down to the audience. One of my favorite parts was the soundtrack. Absolutely fabulous music! I had to track down the songs so I could hear them again and again. This was the first film I'd ever seen from Mongolia, or this director, so I look forward to seeing more. I highly recommend it.

not Disney, but good for older kids
12 February 2024
Warning: Spoilers
What do I mean by "not Disney"? Well, if you're looking for cute and cuddly animals, this is not the movie for you. None of these match that description.

However, if you want something with science and adventure, and are willing to accept these fairly ugly animals as they are, then welcome to this world!

I rather enjoyed the mystery of trying to track down a missing scientist. The Jungle Aces reasoned that he would be able to design an antidote to the dangerous pink foam, as he had been the one who originally created it.

My favorite character was the scientist's daughter, Camellia, now grown, and with a wooden prosthetic hand. That was from a childhood accident in her father's lab, and the reason the scientist had left.

Together with the Jungle Aces, she helps them decipher codes that lead to the scientist. Here's the tricky part: he is older and has dementia. The bunch then had to hope he could still be helpful.

I enjoyed it, and I think my middle-school aged nieces and nephews will, too.

old-fashioned largesse from The King
15 February 2019
I had the privilege of adding a screening of this film during the 2018 Las Vegas Elvis Festival. Rex Fowler was there to provide a bit of background on his involvement with this project, quite a few years ago. I had no idea that Elvis Presley had been so generous, not only to his friends and family, but to complete strangers. The film title specifies Cadillacs, but those weren't the only types of cars he gave away. What a nice insight into the shy boy's heart still in the body of the public man!

for the adult in us
5 October 2018
No, this is NOT for children. Just as one cannot say that all animated movies are for children's eyes - "Felix The Cat" springs to mind - the same can be said for puppet-populated movies. Parents and grandparents should check before bringing their little ones to ANY movie. I loved this movie! I had loved the Muppets, especially Animal and Gonzo and, of course, Kermit, that pig-loving frog. This movie gave me Muppets who were as human and fault-laden as real people are, then cast them in a film noir setting. Fabulous! So glad I had the chance to see it twice on the silver screen!

Ever dream of being a manager and making the 'big' bucks? This movie will certainly give you a different perspective on that! Oh, the things people do...

talk to your mom!
6 November 2017
This movie was such fun! Even though my friend and I were both blessed with fabulous mothers, she and I have both known far too many girlfriends who have quite contentious relationships with moms who don't have a clue. This movie rang so true for us! Three modern-day moms are trying to do the best they can, with two being single moms. Their mothers all decide to come for the holidays - after all, who can deny family at that time of year? And, being good daughters, the young women try to be hospitable while their moms trample all over their daughters' plans. Hilarious fun for a girls' night out!

great memories of my youth
10 October 2015
When I was in high school here in Savannah, I was part of a science research program that allowed selected students to interact with marine scientists to study the marshes, rivers, and ocean. This documentary reminded me of how exciting that research had been! I am so thrilled that students today still have those opportunities to use their skills, and learn new ones, in the study of the world around them. I am especially thrilled that these were public school students, just as I once was. How nice to know money was not a barrier! The documentary also included interviews with the students before and after their experiences at sea. Their teachers and parents were also able to comment, which was very nice. Various scientists involved in the project spoke of the students' work, too, on this experiment to use technology to find submerged historic artifacts. I have seen the film three times and definitely plan to share it with others!
