Tokyo Cowboy (1994)
this film is a pearl
I first watched 'Tokyo Cowboy' at a film festival in Tromsø, Norway, and at that time considered it one of the best films I have ever seen. Now, 12 years later, I have gotten the DVD (after a lot of struggle...) and re-watched it. The conclusion is the same, in spite of the many films I have seen in these 12 years. This is a top-ten for me. Delightful story which combines humor and depth. The much-more-talked-about 'Lost in Translation' does not come up to this one, but 'Translation' is of course not a bad movie.
One could say that the wisdom of 'Tokyo Cowboy' is a bit simple and obvious, yet these themes one cannot discuss and dwell over enough. To find oneself in this complex world, "the road in my heart" as the main character puts it, will never go out-of-date. Highly recommended, watch it! You will not be disappointed. Greetings from Oslo, Norway.
The Aviator (2004)
a disappointment
If the whole world tells you that you must see a certain movie, and this movie wins a lot of Oscar's as well, the disappointment will be big if the movie fails to please you. That's the case with this movie.
Surely a lot of good acting, surely a lot of nice costumes and locations, and the computer-freaks have done a great job with the animations, but this doesn't help if the story is thin and never goes into your heart. It doesn't. As an European, used to see movies from my own country and from Europe, I don't understand what part of the body the people behind the Oscar award committee is thinking with. Do they think with the wallet ? Or can't America offer anything better than this ? Really disappointing.
Mimic (1997)
not a bad scary movie
This is not a bad scary movie at all, but it is certainly not the best ever made. The philosophy of the plot is a bit the same as in the "Aliens" movies - some awful monster creature is going mad, eating humans, multiplying by producing slimy bags and all that stuff known for those who have seen "Aliens". But the story is now taking place in a town on earth, not on a spacecraft in deep space. The actors are OK, special effects quite good, but the story itself is of course weak. The use of lighting impressed me, all details are clear even when filmed underground in deep tunnels - you surely see what is going on - that is not always true with films of this type. If you liked "Aliens" you will probably like this one, but don't expect miracles. One more thing : humor is virtually absent - I don't think I laughed ever once when I saw this film.
Hell Night (1981)
the worst film I've ever seen
I thought I had seen the worst film ever made when I saw a B-film not-to-be-mentioned on TV some years ago, but "Hell Night" is in fact even worse than that film. Incredible ! Unbelievable how dumb and stupid some people can get - how is it possible to make such garbage ? The technical quality of the film is really bad, especially the lighting, or should I say lack of lighting. The story is thin as the ozone layer, the actors stumbling around as in some sort of life crisis. Sound is poor, direction is poor, and the only point in seeing this film is to have a good laugh. Really, really bad. Unbelievable lack of sense of quality and cultural heritage characterize this garbage.
