Dual Survival (2010)
A horrible example of "reality" programming!
Delighted to just learn this show was canceled due to an apparent incident of animal cruelty by one of the hosts. HOWEVER, the basic flaw in the production were the contrived "survival" situations in which the various two member teams enacted implausible situations that even a Boy Scout circa 1950 would nave known how to survive.
I was particularly struck by an episode in the Norwegian mountains in which one of the pair was garbed in shorts and a heavy sweater while climbing mountains in apparent sub-zero temperatures with blowing snow and 50-MPH winds. Only an absolute fool would fail to seek shelter in such conditions. Their exposure to frostbite was so obvious all their exposed skin was cherry red.
After watching at least five episodes I could cite at least 10 incidents of totally incompetent survival techniques and/or comments made by these "experts." What a farcical production!
Live Free or Die (2014)
Learning from this show WILL be hazardous to your health!
If any of these people have lived more than six months of their lives in a rural environment I'd be shocked. They appear to be totally incompetent with regards to woodlands living. Really, surviving long term in the wild by drinking water through a hollow reed? Absurd!
They appear to know little or nothing about true rural/mountain lifestyles. I realize we've become urbanized, but as a kid in the mid-1950s I can assure you any Boy Scout over age 12 knew more about rural lifestyles and rustic living than these self-styled survivalists.
Anyone who subscribed to Mother Earth News in the 1960s would know more after reading just one year's issues. Ditto for anyone who ever read Ellsworth Jaeger's classic tome on wilderness survival.
Proof (2015)
At last! A well-written series
As a professional writer for half a century, I've become incredibly jaded with the pabulum advanced as new TV drama series over the years. Thus, it was with trepidation that I began viewing yet another new summer replacement show.
I'm now ecstatic. Proof is the best new TV show concept I've seen in years (decades?) and far outstrips some of the major network offerings such as Madam Secretary. It is, if it can sustain the momentum, perhaps the finest new drama on television since West Wing.
As a writer who suffers from brain numbness from the steady diet of TV mediocrity, I'm eagerly looking forward to future episodes of Proof.
