Stella Street (2004)
8/10
stella comedy.

to be honest i prefer films that either make me think or make me want to watch them again to make sure i didn't miss anything.. but i saw the TV series of stella street and thought it was blatant but good comedy. hell i didn't even know they had made a movie until last week when it was shown on TV...

i made sure i had a few beers by me as i sat and watched this film. I knew what to expect and i was left in stitches laughing my ass off to most of the sketches and scenes. the old house cleaner helping jimmy greeves and then getting wasted on class a, to David bowie pretending he doesn't care that no one likes his singing. this is a decent attempt at a comedy from the British. it beats sex lives of the potato men and the rest easily...

in my opinion only blackball is as good as this... again a brit flick but you cant compare a British movie to a Hollywood blockbuster unless you have the monetary figure behind it to back you up...

i would recommend stella street the movie to anyone who likes British movies, odd comedys, or a dodgy movie to have a laugh with your mates.

one of candys greats.

i have only seen this movie the once... it was never released in the cinemas to major ad campaigns etc, but when i saw the ads i wanted to see it.. John Candy is a legend, whether its uncle buck or great outdoors he makes me laugh hard.

when i discovered (and i mean discovered) that he was starring in a political p**stake i couldn't wait. i have never been the biggest fan of the U.S government and this film kept me laughing from start to finish...

the scene with them camping out in canada singing bruce springstein to keep themselves feeling patriotic made me spill my beer...

it is, in my opinion, one of the least known and yet best candy performances. like i said i have only seen it once. if i was out and this film was on i would make sure someone was taping it for me to enjoy later on... not too surprise the moore was involved in the movie... although this is a hell of a lot better than his latest "efforts".

it is just a shame that John Candy passed on so suddenly... we have been denied his talent and so far no one has taken his place... and i don't think any of the "talent" today can...

R.I.P John Candy

Das Boot (1981)
10/10
bloody brilliant

all i can say is..

i love this film...

this movie and others like Stalingrad, cross of iron and downfall, to name a few, are more entertaining and "gritty" than all the pro alliance Gung-ho for America movies that have been churned out since the end of the second world war. i say this not as a political point but as an honest opinion...

how many times can you sit and watch America/england with America take the beaches etc... the Germans were in the war too... my granddad even said that a bridge too far wasn't realistic and he WAS THERE IN ARNHAM. all the political correctness seems to have overridden the basic truth in movies, if it is based on real events then make it real... Das Boot gave you the claustrophobic feeling of being in a 1940's Uboat in the north sea/Atlantic ocean, hunting whilst being hunted.

the acting is suburb and the tension between the actors at times is brilliant. truly capturing what it might have been like in the sub.

i would recommend this movie to anyone. regardless of their movie reference.
