Udta Punjab (2016)
Disappointed with the Uncalled-for Cheesy Adulteration in my Heroine!
The bad news is that Udta Punjab is .... 2 hours and 30 minutes long. The good news is that it won't stick in your head longer than maybe the next 2 hours, except if you keep obsessing about it, which would be weird but .... SO, boss, here is why it is what it is:
1. Why does it have to be a two and a half hours drag? Editing ki maa di!
2. Why does it have to be cheesy? What's up with the unnecessary love- shove in Bollywood flicks? AND love-shove is not the only unnecessary masala here. Think about that Palak Paneer you had the other night, and how much turmeric it had. Exactly my point!
3. Why did it have me udta, the hype? It wasn't as if I was about to watch Requiem for a Dream or Trainspotting. Those who haven't seen the aforementioned might adore this Shahid-starer. But...
4. Is Abhishek Chaubey the same guy who directed Ishqiya? How, sirji? Aisa kaise? I watched Ishqiya a week ago, might have to watch it again to restore faith in that man. He is capable of more, I know.
5. Shahid's Tommy is bancho... not the bad-ass kind of bancho, but the annoying kind, fuddu bancho. Reminded me of Ranbir's Besharam act, where Ranbir's character kept saying "besharam" maybe to prove a point I wasn't ready to digest. Except that Shahid has put himself in here! Except that this has Shahid's motivating physique... yes, but for that follow his Insta handle.
6. Alia's Bhojpuri is ... forgivable. Her angle of the story's the fun part. Stuck yet hopeful yet stuck.
7. Kareena's presence in Udta Punjab is kinda equal to that in 3 Idiots. Diljit Dosanjh was the most believable of all, the actor not so much the character.
YET
A big thumbs up for the message (Drugs di Maa di!) and the effort—it's visible! It's capable of MUCH MORE! Give it a try, maybe you will find it udta. It is heavens as compared to Shandaar (!!!!)
BUT ... a fuddu hell as compared to the masterpieces in the same (call it "drug abuse" genre) genre. As other friends here pointed out, it's raw, needs work.
I am just kinda really disappointed with the uncalled-for cheesy adulteration in my heroine!
