Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022)
What...the....heck...was.....that...
...They had 48 years to come up with a decent sequel!! 48 years!!!!!!!!!!!! How could so many people produce, write and direct a movie that is just that god awful. I even wanted to like it after seeing headlines about it being the worst horror movie ever. It's just in under the wire on the 'so bad it's good' criteria.
The Conners (2018)
Enjoying this more than the original run
I loved the original run of "Roseanne", but I am finding I am enjoying The Conners more. I think John Goodman is amazing as always and they stories are dealing with real issues blue collar people face every day. It's irrelevant to me why Roseanne is no longer on the show. While that's a shame, I feel the strength of where they took The Conners keeps me watching.
Headless (2015)
Such a missed opportunity...will appeal to 15 year-old Rob Zombie fans
After watching "Found", I had such high hopes for this movie. Unfortunately, this movie will fade into the forgotten realms that poorly executed horror films fall into. First of all, this movie 'looks' amazing. It looks like the 70's and captures that vibe so well. Even the villains look almost classic from a horror perspective. But once a director goes to the cheap gore, you know they have nothing left in their toolkit, and that's too bad. This movie could have been a cult favorite or even a classic horror. But just shock for the sake of shock, you know the director has no clue on how to create suspense or tension. And don't get me wrong, gore doesn't bother me at all. I just recognize when directors go there and offer nothing else, you realize they are in over their head. I'm sure this movie will appeal to 15 year old Rob Zombie fans, but surely it's a missed opportunity for building a cult following for those who want more out of their horror movies.
But I'm holding out hope Arthur Cullipher's next movie will be much more sophisticated, as he is able to make a great looking movie. He just needs to focus more on the story and what matters most to horror fans who want more than easy, cheap gore.
Bloodline (2004)
Not the typical straight-to-DVD horror movie...
I just finished watching "Bloodline", and have to admit, I really enjoyed this movie. This was a movie I came across in my local video rental store while trying to find a horror movie a little more outside the mainstream.
"Bloodline" is a story about Travis and his autistic brother, Henry, who take a camping trip with friends, only to have the trip end in a bloody massacre. While the twist of events that lead to this massacre are interestingly not disclosed until the end of the movie, the result is Henry running off to hide in the woods while Travis returns home with two other survivors, unaware of Henry's fate. As the movie unfolds, we follow both Travis and Henry as their lives move on beyond the tragic event, slowly learning new facts about what really led to the murders...and what really took place that night.
Despite the low-budget of this movie, it is very well done, and has very professional look to it without the 'too glossy' Hollywood look. The charm is that it has an independent feel to it without coming across in any way cheap. It was clearly made by people who were fans of horror that really cared about what they were doing. The story was interesting and the acting, for the most part, was quite competent. I really enjoyed how expressive Henry (played by Bryan Smithson) was, despite the character's inability to speak. More interesting still, was the attention paid to the details. Specifically, I found the drawings and sketches that Henry had drawn to be very eye-catching and well-done. I paused the DVD a few times to get a better look at some of these drawings.
While this movie may not be for everyone, it is certainly for viewers looking for a great independent horror film that doesn't have a straight-to-DVD look and feel. Don't let the DVD cover fool you (I found it a bit cheesy to be honest), this is definitely worth checking out if you're looking for something that doesn't stick to the typical horror 'formula'.
