Fantastic Four (2015)
Bland, Horrible and Why does this exist?
It's bad and it's a mess, let's put it at that!
This reboot is what's wrong if you decide to reboot something that wasn't really popular to begin with.
Wolfsbane: Say My Name (2018)
Confusing, Messy & Full of Nothing!
I was unaware and confused throughout majority of the "movie", if this would ever be considered one.
I've done so much research about this movie from the cast, production, and other people involved from this project. I finally found someone who understood the plot and story, well sort of. I went into this movie with low expectations and well, it had beyond low expectations then I hoped for, and coming from the same company that made "Low riders vs Zombies From Space" this "movie" was following that same disaster, let me explain why.
THE STORY:
To be fair I there wasn't any story, just lines and dialogue with mediocre performances. There wasn't much to be story to entertained by. There was not act one, act two and act three, there was not stakes, no real threat. It felt like this "movie" was rushed into production just to make ends meet or to show off to people that this is another Superhero film, so it can gather attention for possibly a couple of worst sequels. There is no good guy vs bad guy, it was random people shooting up each other and killing for no reason. Then there's this 'Wolfsbane' guy? His character ark was not present and his backstory was so raw that anybody could have been him in the "movie". I suggest studying or looking up how to screen-write properly.
THE CINEMATOGRAPHY:
According to IMDB, the director of "Lowriders vs Zombies From Space" (David F. Mendez) was responsible for majority of the mess of "cinematography in the "film". I mean there was some shots that was good and some were really-really bad. Majority of the shots were not white balanced, shaky way too much, too noisy, over exposed, colors were off and etc. The cinematography was beyond amateur work and needs more work. I'm not expecting Roger Deakins level of Cinematography but at least use the rule of thirds properly and don't shake the camera to hide bad choreography during "fight scenes". Also take note of this, please interpret a close up more often when a character is feeling emotional rather than long shots, it kills the mood of the scene.
THE EDITING:
My favourite or least favourite part of this. Who in the right mind thought it would be cool to have PowerPoint transitions in a film? Seriously? Like has anyone not seen a film, like any film at all? Because the editing was the one thing that made this mess just more of a mess. If the editing was at least good or decent, then that would've save the film, kinda. From one shot another was very noticeable, whenever someone is acting or forget a line, then you re-shoot it not cut it to the next unfinished line. Don't even get me started again on those horrid transitions. When it comes to using the text tool, use it wisely.
The text was so annoying and obnoxious, it reminded me every 10 minutes that "Hey these characters are in a new location", no way captain obvious. That is when you use an establishing shot or those were forgotten during filming? I only saw one, which looked like it was from a completely different movie.
The VFX, it was... How do I say this without being too harsh? It was a Monstrosity. The effects weren't motion tracked right, or even at all. It was cheap and lazy, I mean there's tons of VFX goodies out there but the ones in this "film" wasn't it. I suggest planning out your shots first and how you plan to use those shots to insert the vfx in it.
THE SOUND:
Well what do I say? That most of the dialogue you couldn't hear and the only one you hear on screen was coming from someone else's mic feed? Will that's correct. I could not hear a single line being delivered at all even if I did there was this loud music that had washed it away. Maybe it was good thing, who knows? I suggest investing into professional audio recording equipment.
I don't know what else to say. It was a student project or just really rushed because it would be cool to show people that you made the first superhero movie in Texas? I wish I knew the answer to that. If you do wish to make a sequel, which is possibly true, take a step back and make short films to learn upon the failure and build up until you are ready to make another film.
Lowriders vs Zombies from Space (2018)
Bland, Confusing and Flawed
It's really hard to criticize a movie when there's no plot present, nor character ark.
I've stumbled upon this "movie" from a Facebook group and knew this movie might be something exciting, I was wrong. My expectations were something more of a low budget and fun movie from the SyFy channel.
Story:
Well there isn't any solid plot element in this movie, besides the boy taking girl to party in a low Rider is the basic idea that could've been expanding upon on. I advise researching on how to write a proper screen play.
Cinematography:
Nothing really special here, just amateur work. Need to practice on your cinematography and rule of third placement.
Sound Mixing/ SFX:
There wasn't really anything here, it's all Raw and unedited. That one scene at the bar needed to be recorded with character lines only and insert music in post-production to avoid that awkward overlap of sounds.
FX:
It's self explanatory. If something doesn't look good, then it doesn't look good. Try to sell the effects more realistic if possible.
Characters:
The characters are boring and uninteresting. Make us appeal to a character rather than just slapping random lines to an actor. Character arcs are very important as well. We want to know why a character is doing what they do and their impact on the story.
Paradoxon (2017)
Fresh, Original and Entertaining!
Never I've seen anything like this! From the incredible cinematography to the amazing writing and the plot twist at the end, this deserves to be made into a feature film.
It's a must watch!
Domestic Hell (2018)
Suspenseful & Edge of Your seat
Domestic Hell is definitely a step up from Bloody Drama! Domestic Hell tells 2 different stories as a stalker who abducts women is on the loose causing havoc, while one victim tries to escape. This suspenseful thriller will keep you on the edge of your seat!
Vader: A Star Wars Theory Fan Series (2018)
Style over substance
I overhyped myself for this "Fan Film" or more precisely, Fan series. In all honesty, this just felt like a way to make something to show off or gain popularity for the Star Wars Theory channel. I'm not trying to be rude or anything but it just doesn't feel like a passion project. This was really rushed, like really rushed.
Kickstarter:
I'm aware that most of the original plot elements and concepts have been scrapped from the Kickstarter page. I can see why now. From concept to final, there's a major difference, due to improper budgeting and aiming too high to create a fan series.
Budget:
You have a budget of $100,00? Yes? If you really wanted to make a series, like you, initially wanted to, then this would've been at least $10,000 for ten episodes or $25,000 for four episodes. The budget really worried me because this looks like something DW 2012 would create on a quarter of that budget you have. With technology moving fast, creators can make wonderful content such as Film Riot, Corridor or rocket jump. I understand this is not a film channel but yet the first episode is an eyesore to look at for many reasons.
Before I continue, this is not for Star Wars Theory himself. I really feel bad for the crew themselves. I know 6 ½ months is not a lot of time for a project like this, although it's just a pilot I'm assuming since the majority of the budget went into ONLY one episode.
Lighting:
The lighting is very bland in this episode. The only good shot that looked good is the establishing shot from the Naboo scene. I feel like this like that one scene in SOLO, it had better lighting than most of these one colored shots. Whoever was responsible for lighting, just tone the blue and red down a little. The Padme scene lighting did not fit in with the rest.
VFX:
You guys did an absolutely great job on the lightsaber, sparks, lightning and blaster parts, the other parts, not so much. The little window from the ship when Vader and Palpatine were talking felt really fake. The fire in the episode looked really bad, please visit Action VFX and buy some fire essentials. There are way too many lens flares in the episode, this isn't a Michael Bay or JJ Abrams film. The slip space scene, fleet scene, and Naboo felt more real than the rest of the episode, good job guys!
Set Design:
For a project this big, the weird looking room was too clunky and felt empty. The set design could've been green screened and would look better. The Vader chamber scene looked amazing (VFX) and I feel like that's how every scene should look like. The blend between VFX and sets should feel organic, not off-putting.
Acting:
The clone troopers and extras did an amazing job. The girl that played Padme knows how to act. Young Anakin was good. Vader did an amazing job and Palpatine felt cringey (not in the dream). Keep up the good work!
Costume Design:
Nothing to say here, it's really good. The clone troopers need more work. Vader's helmet was bad because you can tell its plastic when the light hits it.
Sound Mixing:
The dB was balanced very well. The music that was mixed in need to be slightly less loud than it already was. The foley needed some D-Verb.
Cinematography:
It was good, really good., despite some dead space in some scenes. You really know what to do but I feel like the set design killed some shots and made them feel weird. It needed more close-ups to make the dream feel more suspenseful.
Screenplay:
It felt rushed. I feel like it was written to show off a lot of VFX rather than the story. Watch some Tv-shows or web-series to understand how a series is written.
FX:
It's good. Except when palatines on the floor.
Overall, this was good. It wasn't the greatest Star Wars fan film. I just feel bad for the crew who had to rush this amazing project.
A note for the future Star Wars Theory. When you have $100,000 for a series, use it wisely.
Crimson Blade (2016)
Mysterious , Interesting and Fresh.
If you enjoy watching post apocalyptic shorts like I do , then you should definitely watch this! was it boring? no it gets to the point right away. Did exceed expectations? Kind of but was worth it.
Now here is my criticism for this short.
Let's start with the Foley.
-Footsteps were not in sync in the scene were Crimson was walking back towards the woman in distress.
-The breathing is annoying. Take it down a notch next time.
-The blood splatter when a marauder is kicked into a bear trap sounds rubbish and cartoonish.
-The punches and kicks were actually good for a short.
-When Crimson fired her guns , it sounded awkward. Try doing some research on what sound do different guns make.
-The thunder crash sounded like someone grabbing a bag of chips far away.
-The wolves or animals sound towards the end sounded to generic.
Now let's dive into the story.
According the plot you have written, "A post-apocalyptic western, this short vignette follows the outlaw known only as Crimson Blade as he fights for survival in a desolate future." (Spoiler for whoever sees it, Crimson is a she.) the reveal in the description leads to a false reveal. Should've left it as "Mysterious Outlaw".
-According to the short it's, "Crimson Blade, a mysterious outlaw who is wanted in the desolate western future encounters a woman in distress in they're short path."
-I believed it was going to be about an outlaw fighting what was going to be a threat to others and themselves, instead it was about marauder's trying to ambush our main character on they're path to wherever they are going. It wasn't bad but just misleading.
-When Crimson is grunting, it already gave away the "He" was a "She". pretty much it killed the big reveal.
- And Crimson letting that one marauder go defeats the purpose of killing that woman who threatened to blackmail her with her "Secret", the boy knows too. He should be dead as well.
Dialogue & Acting.
-Acting was actually decent and not quite bad as other shorts. -there was some useless lines such as "You're good as they say, but i've killed better." felt chessy. "I thought I smelled bitch" line sounded like out of a bad comedy.
- The woman just screamed for no reason towards the end as Crimson got back up.
and finally cinematography.
-It was decent. needs better camera work. -There was too many close ups, try using over the shoulder shots for dialogue scenes and wide shots for actions scenes.
- I love the opening shot where it tells you what world we are in and reveals who our main character is with that wanted poster.
at the end of all this, there needs to be more story. I love the name Crimson Blade but I barely got to know her. I recommend watching some Film Riot and Corridor Digital content on you-tube to better understand character development and world building. I would like to see a part two that talks about on how the world got that way and who is Crimson Blade and what is their purpose in the story.
