Jack Reacher: Never Go Back (2016)
All that is wrong with Hollywood
I was looking forward to the movie. I was sorely disappointed. What I saw was the same clichéd, vapid story-line that has been made a thousand times in Hollywood.
Let me lay it out for you.
1. The protagonist is hard, distant, anti-social 2. The co-star is eye candy and can't do it all on her own 3. The side story does everything she can... everything you expect and predict she will do to get everyone killed. 4. In the end, the protagonist has to face off single-handedly against the bad guy, even though the co-star is just above them with a weapon
The last half hour of this movie could have been left out and a disclaimer put on the screen saying "You already know how this is going to end, so we won't bother".
How many times did the stars walk around weapons they could have picked up and used? Case in point, when the costar choked out the bad guy with a garden hose, she ran right past him and didn't grab his gun. For that matter, why were these two not carrying the whole time?
How many times did the costar try to hammer someone on the head with the bottom of her fist, only to get thrown across the room? Why did it take forever for the costar to make it to help the star at the end when she was just above where he fell with a handgun right there?
I'm just glad I didn't go to the theater to see this film. Instead, I rented it online for a third of the price (still too much).
Hollywood is so over.
Heartland (2007)
Finished second season and I'm not sure what to do next
This show is on the verge of becoming a great show. However, the lazy writing is becoming so annoying that, at the end of the second season, I'm beginning to think I've had enough.
My issues: 1. How many times is someone who should know better going to speed up to the corral and honk their horn? 2. Can anyone say anything about someone else without that person waking up behind them? 3. Can two people have a conversation without the "third party" walking up at the perfectly wrong moment? 4. How many lies can Lou tell in one show? - How many lies can Mallory tell in one show... and get away with? 5. How many times can Mallory say OH MY GOD? 6. How many parents want their kids going around saying OH MY GOD every five minutes? 7. Why isn't Lou blonde?
I'm sorry, but real writers don't need to use the same gags over and over and over again.
I keep reading this series was meant for youth. If it was really meant for youth somebody would have put a muzzle on Mallory to keep her from lying and gossiping.
I'm also currently watching a family-friendly Hallmark series on Netflix that is an adult series. The language is nothing compared to Heartland (the kids' series) and the gags are basically nonexistent. And those writers can cover a full hour episode without using the old "walk-up" gag once!
As I said, this show could be a great show. I can overlook the not- so-great acting because the characters are, in their own special ways, lovable. Even the bad guys aren't all bad. The episode flow is always good and the ending is almost always heartwarming. It's just that some of the characters are comically unbelievable.
Well, that's my two cents worth. Probably a few years late, but I feel better now.
Overcome (2008)
Still trying to figure out what this was made for
This movie was a waste of 1.5hrs.
The things I've read about it being an "evangelical edit" of a mormon movie make perfect sense. There are no in-church scenes, no teaching moments and no discussion of who God is and what He expects.
I have to assume the aforementioned things were either in the mormon edition but would not have translated to an evangelical film, or they were never in the movie. Either way, this edition pretty much demonstrated that mormonism is not Christianity. For the Christian, repentance and faith in Christ is required. Reconciliation is sought because of a heart changed by Christ, and out of a desire to bring that change to others. The motivations of Colton's change were absent other than he just felt the life he had been leading was wrong. There was no discussion about why he really felt he needed to change. There was a lot of prayer, but no discussion on what the prayer was about or to whom.
Jaycee Lynn was almost believable. Colton went from the kid brother in "Sixteen Candles" to Wally Cleaver.
This film was devoid of any spiritual content. It seemed the filmmakers wanted to tell me something about changing my life... I'm just not certain what.
Waking (2013)
Man this movie had potential!
This looked like it was going to be a great movie. But that was before Ben became the ultimate loser. This movie was also crammed full of cinematic clichés.
Warning... potential spoiler alert (depends how anal you are)!!
For example, every time Ben tried to confess to someone they walked all over him and he never got a word in. Another example... the five minute confession to the mechanic because he was feeling guilty. Or being an idiot and getting punched in the gut by the angry boyfriend because he was a stupid loser!
Seriously, making Ben a little more intelligent (how the heck did he become a psychologist anyhow?) and making the least effort at serious adult dialog between him and his - well, everybody - would have made this an 8 or better.
You think i'm being harsh now... my wife was telling me to calm down 3/4 of the way through the movie so she could hear the dialog.
I wanted to like this move... I really did.
