1883 (2021)
Wonderfully Done
I am a history and film buff by all accounts, so maybe I am a tad partial. Either way, 1883 excels in it's entertainment, writing and storytelling. I score this VERY high but there are still a thing or two I would adjust.
Casting: superb. Tim McGraw does a great job and that shouldn't surprise people. Yes he is a country singer first and that is an artist no matter how you slice it. This just adds to his artisté portfolio. Maybe sometimes some people want more of the 'performance' or 'eccentricities', but for me that's not what you're meant to see through his character. It's not about him. For such a tough outer shell Sam Elliott punches you right in the stomach, he is magnetic and vulnerable. Eric Nelson and James Hébert are forces to be reckoned with, they work off each other incredibly well, one would think they are living in a tent on the plains together in 2022.
That being said, most of the minor (1 episode or less) characters do a great job doing the job and some are average, which is fine because of the tiny stake they have within the story.
Script:
PRO's - The vernacular and snappiness is expert filmmaking. A. K. A the script!!!
Sometimes I was aware that yes, this is a show because no one is that clever or witty in response in every encounter, but that's what makes it pure edge-of-your-seat entertainment.
Sometimes if we just make the most realistic show.. we would say.. "well, don't do that, that's my daughter!" That would be quite boring. So I support you Tyler Sheridan, you know what's up.
Cinematography:
It's hard to make sunsets, campfires, and open country ugly. Still, the expert lighting and framing and camera movement makes this series scratch the itch if you're a cinema aficionado. For the average viewer it might just blend in. I still have to note the artistic choice to use longer cuts rather than your typical, quick cut, action flick is the right way to go. Traveling by wagon across the countryside probably had a lot of down time, and this style of cinematography was the correct choice for this story.
There is a lot I can say about this series, I will leave you with the reason I didn't give this show a 10/10. Tyler's use of voiceover was a bit tiresome. Each time it started, I was always ready for it to end. Luckily It's only a quick "poem" as each episode begins and ends, and maybe it will take a 2nd watch to understand it's hidden brilliance. If I'm willing to watch it a second time just to find the magic in its voiceovers, then what really is there to complaint about?
Scrolling platform and page, this is the show I look for, as the escape I yearned for.
