Semi-Pro (2008)

Underrated

This movie is actually pretty good. Sure it has a few dumb scenes and some that don't make any sense, but overall it's a solid story and hilarious the whole way through. The contrast of Will Farrell being ridiculous and Woody Harrelson being the voice of reason is great. There are even a few serious scenes and drama between the characters but not enough to take away from the overall lighthearted feeling of the film. The setting being in the 1970s is also well done. The directors of this move obviously did their research on what professional basketball was like back then too. This movie has aged well and is a cult classic for anyone who is a fan of basketball and comedy.

Decent story. Poor execution

Warning: Spoilers
I watched this for free on a streaming service and I like the concept of this movie. The story surrounding it is interesting and the special effects are very good. The acting is OK. However a lot of things in this movie make no sense; like how did Eddie take off and land vertically with no downward thrust? Why did the pilots randomly get a mini vacation while on deployment and in the middle of a mission? The command center for Eddie is in a huge empty part of the aircraft carrier and the computer wiz guy who's managing it doesn't even have a uniform. The planes can fly anywhere over the Pacific Ocean in less than an hour and with no concern for fuel. I could go on but it seems as if the producers of this film didn't consult anyone in the military despite there being a ton of real Naval equipment in it. The movie has a few good moments but it definitely could have been a lot better. I'd like to get a reboot of this story with different directors as it seems even more relevant in 2023.

Non-stop background music ruins it

I'll start off by saying it is technically a good movie. The acting is good and the storytelling is good if a bit too quickly paced. It basically starts off at full speed and doesn't slow down. There wasn't really any suspension building in any scene except the bomb test. My biggest complaint is the intense background music that never stopped for more than a minute or two and it gets old pretty quick. In fact I contemplated leaving the theater because the constant dramatic music was driving me nuts. It's incessant and takes away from the film. This movie would have been a lot better if it had 50-75% less unnecessary background music.
