Happy Birthday (2002)
thought provoking
This film is very honest. Characters are well played and believable - and yet it's the believability what we expect from the actors the most. Five stories told here are usual, but yet moving. What surprised me the most, was fact that 'Happy Birthday' is not an optimistic movie - in fact only one of the five main characters' story ends up promising (but none of them leads to a happy ending). What makes the movie even more sad is the music - beautiful but still rather sorrowful. Watching these short stories makes us think about ourselves, about wasted chances and the way things turned out in our lives. Sometimes we might take things in our hands but usually events just hit us unsurprisingly - like in this movie. 'Happy Birthday" is simple, but beautiful and definitely worth seeing.
The Wolves of Kromer (1998)
Charming and enjoyable
WOLVES OF KROMER is a low budget movie and you can see that all the time you watch it. Some may find the look of the wolves amusing (the furry tail sticking out of their pants in particular), but I think that's not the point. The director paid more attention to the case of two elderly ladies who kill another one -and this issue takes more time than the wolves actually. Another weakness of WOLVES is the lack of any deeper psychological attempt to explain why do characters act the way they do. But do we get that kind of stuff in fairy tales? No. Fairy tales are supposed to be enjoyable. And so are THE WOLVES OF KROMER. The movie is cute, charming at times, the music and photography are beautiful (and you'll love the landscapes). This is not a masterpiece, but just a nice and sweet fable. Don't expect to witness a great movie or you'll get disappointed. Expect to see simplicity, sweetness and beauty. And you'll have fun.
A Journey to Avebury (1971)
simply beautiful
Derek Jarman is often said to be a painter rather than a movie director. Indeed, with his films he makes pictures that seem to be more important than the plot (which is usually unclear or missing at all). But those pieces of art he creates using camera are beautiful and astounding.
A JOURNEY TO AVEBURY, his 1971 silent short movie, is a literal journey that we can experience. We are being taken to Avebury and given the chance to admire it for 10 minutes. The shots are incredibly beautiful, as we see a huge stone or trees bathed in orange light of sunset.
The film lacks a plot and sound and should be treated as a collection of images rather than a movie. If you like Jarman's art - you'll be pleased with this one. If you like beauty - you'll love it. But if you're looking for action or amusement, better walk around it because these 10 minutes might just be too long for you.
The Prince & Me (2004)
don't waste your time on it
I saw this film because my sister was watching it so I joined her because I had nothing better to do at the moment.
I advise you all to go around it because it's not worth ANYONE's time. I suppose people who dislike romantic comedies (or bad films at general) won't go to see it anyway, but I must warn all the ones who feel like watching it - just don't do it. The comedy is poor, typical and pathetic. If you are in the mood for a romantic comedy (but a good one) - go and see "4 weddings and a funeral" or "love actually" :)
The movie "Prince & me" is one of the poorest films I've ever seen and I wish I hadn't seen it at all :)
Presque rien (2000)
interesting storyline and beautiful photos
'Presque rien' is a story of two young boys falling in love during summer stay by the seaside. I don't want to tell the plot, because it's not what's most important about this film (but you can be sure that it's interesting and original). The best part of this movie is the cinematography. The visual side of 'Presque rien' is so amazing it deserves highest note. It leaves you charmed with its beauty.
As for the plot, it is shown in uneven, rather complicated way. There is no simple chronology nor there are answers to all the questions the film brings. But this is what makes 'Presque rien' even more interesting. I recommend this movie to all the people for whom the artistic side of films is very important and they will not be disappointed.
