Dinner for Schmucks (2010)
A really funny movie
Wow, lots of mixed reviews on this thing so far. Well, I'm going to throw in my two cents worth because I saw the French version (Le Diner des Cons) a few years ago and therefore had a reference point in mind when I saw Dinner for Schmucks.
If you think the businessmen in Dinner are mean, please see the French version--I would not have given it as high a vote precisely because the meanness in that one reaches depths I don't appreciate at all. Also, the French movie is not even close to being as funny as Dinner is.
I've never liked slapstick or very physical humor much and, even though there's a little of it in Dinner, I enjoyed the movie very much. I don't know about these reviewers who say there's a chuckle here or there--my family lives in a very conservative community that, for the most part, has little sense of humor--everyone in the theater when we saw the movie absolutely ROARED with laughter too many times to keep count. Some people nearly lost their breath. Lots of coughing.
Hmm. I guess everyone has to judge for him- or herself. But I do think the Dinner bashers went into it expecting a completely different movie and maybe they shouldn't have gone at all.

Huh???
Wow, I hardly know what to say after reading all the other comments here. We rented this thing from Netflix, having no idea that it was only 43 minutes long, so right off the bat I was more than a little ticked that we wasted a rental on something so short. However, it came so highly recommended from their site that I was looking forward to it. Yes, there are some witty song lyrics and some of the music is even fairly nice, but overall this was a waste of...well, 43 minutes. I can't recommend this to anyone other than maybe some bored 12-year-olds who enjoy scatological humor (and what 12-year-old doesn't?). I enjoy tongue-in-cheek more than most, as does my husband, but we were both very grateful when this thing reached the end credits.
Kabluey (2007)
What's funny about it?
I'm sorry--I really wanted to like this movie but there was very little likable about it. Comedy? No. It is sad and evokes feelings of sympathy for some of the characters (yes, they are pitiful) but there is no comedy involved. For single folks, the scenes of insane children running wildly amok might be mildly amusing, but for parents, it is horrifying. Children sprinkling powdered cleanser into their uncle's mouth? No. Not funny. If the uncle had done something to provoke them, maybe it would have been funny, but there was nothing like that. There were a few "aha" moments but even they were bathetic, not funny. Only see this movie if you are desperate and have no other options.
Nanny McPhee (2005)
One of the best children's movies ever made!
I can't imagine how someone could not love this movie. The performances are excellent and the costumes and sets are fanciful and somewhat outrageous (in a good way). The first time I saw it I didn't know that Emma Thompson played the title role, and without knowing you wouldn't recognize her...at first. Colin Firth is wonderful as the haggard widower and father of seven mischievous children who have run off nanny after nanny. Angela Lansbury turns in yet another fine performance as Aunt Adelaide, an intolerant snob who wishes to force Colin Firth's character to marry by a deadline or lose funding from her that he desperately needs. How Nanny McPhee works her magic on the children is the best part. Like Mary Poppins minus the music, this is a great movie.
Tammy and the Doctor (1963)
unrealistic
Being from the south, I'm insulted by the portrayal of Tammy's speech. No one--I repeat--no one from the south has, does, or ever will speak that way. I've known some very backwoods people in my time, and even they did not speak in the way that the Tammy character does in this movie. It makes no sense and is very unrealistic. It's too bad that the writers didn't spend a single day in Mississippi to see how people from that state actually talk. While the plot is just as implausible as well, there are some slightly refreshing and entertaining aspects to this movie. It cannot, however, come even close to being compared to the original--Tammy and the Bachelor, a much classier movie.
