All That I Need (2005)
Brilliant!
It was my great pleasure to have attended the May 20th screening of this film in Cannes. I liked it very much: I found it clever, very well cast and certainly thought provoking on many levels.
What I admire is the fact that at first the director establishes the experimental character of his subject (a thesis) and then he spins it in a way that he touches a reality with implicitly putting us, the viewer, in a constant state of wonder...Is it true? Is it a theory? Are the people real? How can they be "acting" since they look so sincere, even awkward at times like in real life?...etc... The viewers think, they dance with him, as he leads them in an emotional roller coaster and yet there is resistance.
The games he plays with the viewers' mind is very clever and we come out of the film wanting to know more (I remember this lady who came with me, and who asked all of these questions of the director afterwards: she had fallen into "his trap", she was worried about the money...this was great because this is obviously exactly what the filmmaker intended).
The filmmaker did his job with brio!
