Game of Thrones: Oathbreaker (2016)
Good episode
Albeit not as surprising as the previous episodes, this episode was pretty good. I'm not going to summarize the whole episode with lengthy paragraphs, so I'll try to keep it short; in Meereen, Varys gets quite some screen time, as he threatens the prostitute who slit the throat of an Unsullied, while providing her safe passage, eventually knowing who funds the Sons Of The Harpy. Meanwhile, Tyrion in a hilarious scene, felt like a socially awkward man, as Missandei and Grey Worm kept on a poker face. He tried to play a drinking game with them(good throwback to the Lannister tent where Tyrion, Shae and Bronn had a drinking game), only to find out that they didn't drink.
Moving on to Bran's visions, we finally got to see Young Ned, Howland Reed etc fight Arthur Dayne, and Oswell Went, the two kings-guard of Prince Rhaegar, as Ned asks why they weren't with Rhaegar. A sword-fight ensues, and everyone is killed, except Ned and Arthur. Arthur, known to possess the legendary sword, Sword Of The Morning in the books, possesses not one, but two swords in the show, which is a weird change. Bran was told that Ned killed Arthur, only to find out in the vision that it was a lie, as Ned is almost killed by Arthur, only to be pierced in the neck by Howland Reed, as Ned delivers the killing blow. The casting for young Ned is spot on, and we see him in a different light here; an angry young man, as he hears screams of Lyanna from the Tower. The scene ends there, as Bloodraven tells Bran he can't spend too much time looking at visions.
In Kings Landing, we finally see Varys' little birds; they're little, impoverished children, whom Qyburn feeds sweets in return for whispers, as Cersei asserts that she wants the little birds everywhere. Tommen meets with the High Sparrow, obviously angry that his mother isn't being allowed to see Myrcella's body, as well as angry at her treatment, as the High Sparrow says that she has to stand trial in the front of the Seven. Tommen is easily moved and fooled by the High Sparrow's speech. As we expected of him; he's still an innocent child.
In Bravos, Arya finally gets back her eyes, after a lot of questions asked by the Waif, as we get a throwback to the past, about the Hound, and Arya's list, as well as Arya's family, as the show gives a hint that Rickon's still alive.
In Winterfell, Smalljon Umber brings two hostages for Ramsay, though he refuses to bend his knee to him, while throwing some F-Bombs. Classic Umber. The hostages turn to be none other than Rickon and Osha, as Smalljon presents Ramsay with the severed head of Shaggydog, Rickon's dire-wolf. Rickon's actor, Art Parkinson has grown! Quite a change. This will be the fuel for Battle of Bastards that's to come.
In Castle Black, Jon awakens and can barely stand, shocked at what's happened. The only thing he remembers is being stabbed by his own men. Mel asks him what he saw after he died, and he says nothing, to her dismay. He dons the Lord Commander's garb, as Tormund makes a dirty joke, hugging him, the next being Edd, as we see that Jon's not changed much, except his hair. However, all the mutineers are prepared for hanging, with Jon walking toward them, as he asks them for his last words. Bowen says Jon shouldn't be alive, stating it's not right. Jon replies "Neither was killing me". He moves onto the next man. Yarwyck pleads Jon to tell his family that he died fighting the Wildlings. Alliser then says he had a choice, to betray his Commander or the Night's Watch. He then says that Jon bringing the Wildlings was a dangerous problem and had to be stopped. Jon moves onto the silent Olly, with the boy glaring furiously at Jon with immense hatred. Jon reluctantly cuts down the rope, killing all four traitors.
Jon looks at Olly's lifeless body, feeling remorse. Afterwards, Jon takes off his cloak and hands it to the confused Edd. Jon then says Edd can do whatever he wants with the cloak, unofficially labeling Edd as the 999th Lord Commander of the Night's Watch. Jon then leaves the courtyard, saying "And my watch has ended." with the rest of the wild-lings and Night's watch men looking on. Wow! Talk about character development. As R R Martin said, resurrection would change his characters, and we see that Jon has come back darker and more brooding. Death has finally released Jon from the vows, and he truly looked tired of the bullshit that's been happening in the Night's watch; in the first season, he was told great stories about brave Night's watch men, only to find out that they're a group of thieves, robbers, etc. It is pretty evident that Jon is going to don the Stark armor and take back Winterfell from Ramsay, adding that Rickon and Sansa's situation only fuels his quest to kill Ramsay. We're gonna see new shades in Jon's character, and it's pretty brilliant.
Captain America: Civil War (2016)
Russo Brothers strike gold again
I had high expectations when I saw the trailers of this movie, and the hype surrounding Spider-man, and I wasn't disappointed. The best part of the movie is that they finally address the collateral damage that is done when the Avengers fight the bad guys. Marvel had been criticized for not showing civilian deaths in Avengers and other movies, unlike DC who are more realistic and like to go dark, but this movie addresses it.
The government wants The Avengers to sign an accord, so that their actions aren't unchecked anymore. Everything they would do would be under the orders of the government, but Steve Rogers isn't pleased about it and wants the Avengers to remain an independent, private body. That's the main theme of the movie. And it's executed well. Two conflicting opinions, over who's right; Tony or Steve? Both bring up strong points, so it does really get hard to choose, but after watching the movie, you'll side with Team Cap.
The action and the special effects were brilliant as usual, and this movie was better than Winter Soldier. The Russo Brothers proved that they can make good, solid, mature movies, something that is uncommon typically in Marvel movies, because it's targeted at a younger audience.
Tom Holland as Spider-man was funny, as he's in the comics, and almost every character gets a good amount of screen time. Bucky's a morally complex character, who feels the guilt for all he's done, and as he says in the movie to Tony, he remembers everything he's done, and that guilt is eating him away. I'd like to see how he deals with the guilt in the future movies. This one is a solid 10.
Game of Thrones: Home (2016)
Game Of Thrones is back in the game!
Wow, just wow! After last week's episode, I must admit I thought the first half of this season would be quite slow, but I was pleasantly surprised. The episode opens with Bran and Three Eyed Raven appear at Winterfell in a vision, back when Ned and Benjen were young children. We also get to see how young Lyanna Stark looked like, and the sweetest moment was when we saw that Hodor could talk, and his name is Wylis. Things just got pretty interesting.
Meanwhile, Roose Bolton is discussing plans with Ramsay, whom we tells that people will treat him like a mad dog, if he maintains a reputation as a mad dog, which was an excellent scene. Then the Maester arrives and tells him that Walda has given birth to a child. This was the moment when I knew **** was about to go down, and it did! Ramsay hugged his father and stabbed him in the heart! Hah, Roose got the same treatment as Robb. Betrayed by his own man, or rather, bastard son. That's karma played beautifully. In another of the show's most sickening moments, Ramsay baits Walda and her baby boy into what looks like a small compound, where he unleashes his hounds, even though she begs for mercy. Terrifying. When you thought Ramsay couldn't get even more evil. The hounds tear through her and her baby. Now, Ramsay is the leader of the Boltons. Got what he wanted. Roose was one of my favorite villains, and it's sad to see him go, as he wasn't a crazy mad dog like Ramsay, but was a calm, evil man, how I like my villains.
In Kingslanding, the guy who whipped out his **** when Cersei was paraded naked was shamelessly bragging about how she liked it, and karma struck again, as Zombie Mountain, aka Sir Robert Strong just held his head and drove it into a wall, crushing him. Very brutal.
And we finally get to see Euron Greyjoy, who would even kill his own brother, Balon to rule the Ironborn. Balon tries to stab Euron on the suspending bridge, when Euron grabs him and throws him into the water below. Now, with the Kingsmoot, it'll be interesting to see Euron take the throne and we can finally expect to see stuff that happened in the books.
Meanwhile, in Meereen, Tyrion in a heartwarming scene, goes to unchain the other two dragons, while telling how he wanted a small dragon as a gift on his birthday, and how he finally got it now, as he unchains one of the dragons, who surprisingly doesn't exhale fire at him. "Dragons are intelligent, more intelligent than humans" is what Tyrion says that the ma-esters used to say about the dragons. I loved this dialogue. I commend his guts to go do something as life-threatening as unchaining two starving, angry dragons! In a funny scene, Tyrion asks Varys to punch him if he ever does anything as stupid as that. Tyrion and Varys's scenes are always enjoyable to see.
Finally, in Castle Black, the mutineers are arrested, as the wild-lings outmatch them, and Davos asks Melisandre to resurrect Jon, as he saw her do unimaginable stuff like spawning a shadow baby, etc. This instills some confidence into Melisandre, who however thinks she doesn't possess the gift to do that stuff, and doesn't know how Thoros of Myrr resurrected Beric 6 times. But we do see Jon in only his underwear, as Mel cleanses his stab wounds, recites the Valyrian ritual prayer, but nothing happens, even for 6 times! Ah, what a tease, HBO! But, in cinematic style, as everyone leaves the room, Ghost suddenly senses a presence, and Jon wakes up, as he takes a deep breath!
Fantastic episode. This is what the real GoT is. Character deaths, character developments, excellent plot pacing. I hope this season stays that way.
Daredevil: Bang (2016)
Explosive Episode!
I had high hopes from this show when I saw the trailer of Season 2. And the first episode didn't disappoint. Although the start was slow and was building up to the end, it was interesting to watch. That's what I love about this show. There are no dull moments at all. The episode shows the post-Fisk Hell's Kitchen; Fisk is gone and every gang wants to get their hands on the city. Nelson&Murdock get several clients, but they're broke. Surprisingly, this episode didn't show how Karen would cope with killing Wesley. She seemed pretty normal, which was quite strange. Anyway, the Irish gang is shown discussing about how Daredevil took out Fisk and did them a favor and how they're going to reclaim the city. But wait! Bullets fly continuously through the windows and everyone is massacred, except one guy who gets a shard of glass embedded into his stomach. The police are thinking it's a rival gang, but our police officer friend discovers that it's not an ordinary gang; they have paramilitary training. Daredevil finds out who's supplying the guns and it's another slaughter at the slaughterhouse(no pun intended). One man before dying reveals that it's not an army, it's just one man. Quite easy to guess who it is; The Punisher! He almost kills the guy who survived the Irish Massacre, but Karen drives him away in due time. He almost again kills him again through a sniper, but Daredevil stops it in time. They have a fistfight, and Punisher, as ruthless as he is, fires a shot at Daredevil throwing him off the building. Bang! Great episode. Pretty entertaining.
The Walking Dead: Not Tomorrow Yet (2016)
Excellent Episode!
There are going to be spoilers. Anyway, the first half of the episode consists of Rick gathering everyone in the church and telling them that if they need food, they need to ambush the Saviors. Morgan says that they should talk to the Saviors first, which Rick disagrees, and surprisingly, so does Aaron. He says that he doesn't want another attack on Alexandria and that they've lost enough.
Morgan, Carl, Denise, Eugene, etc stay away. Carol, earlier delivers cookies to everyone, including Tobin, who says he loves them, but Carol doesn't believe him, thinking he's screwing with her. She maintains a kill list in her diary, and walks out for a cigarette break at night. Tobin talks to her and they sit beside each other at the porch. He tells her that he's terrified of what she does, and believes she can only do it because she's a mother. Carol asks if she's a mother to him too..and it's obvious, that he says no. Things ensue, and they have a small kiss. Wow, this was unexpected!
Anyway, Andy, the guy who's hand was broken and was in the Saviors' compound before to deliver them supplies, draws a rough map of the Saviors' compound and the group leaves. Maggie and Carol take guard near the vehicles, while the rest scavenge for Walkers. Why? Because they plan to give the Saviors', Gregory's head. They manage to somehow find a walker head which somewhat looks like Gregory and Rick punches it thrice to make it look like Andy hit Gregory's nose in retaliation to getting his hand broke.
Andy goes alone and delivers the head to two Savior' guards. Things are very tense, but they're fooled into believing it's the real Gregory. One of them goes inside, while Daryl kills the other one from the back. Boom! Throat slit. Classic! Anyway, Rick's group disappears again and the other gets the sword from the back. With both of them dead, they infiltrate the inside of the compound. Rick opens a door to a room, and silently drives his knife into a sleeping Saviors' skull...err that was brutal. Glenn and Heath had a talk before about killing, and how they both hated it. Anyway, Glenn and Heath open another room's door, and Glenn reluctantly drives his knife into a Saviors' skull. Heath is still too mentally weak to kill, so Glenn obliges and kills the other Savior. Meanwhile, Sasha drives her knife into a Saviors' stomach, but he manages to sound the alarm, creating a panic among everyone. With no choice, Rick, Daryl, Michonne and others go on a murderous rampage, shooting every Savior in sight. A gunfight ensues, and Aaron drives his knife into a Saviors' heart! Beautiful. Some good character development there. Glenn and Heath are assaulted by the gunfire, but they manage to hide in a room. With no choice, they pick up two LMGs and shoot through the door, murdering around 6 Saviors. Dark as hell..and I love it!
Also, Father Gabriel points his gun at a Savior and the Savior mocks him. Gabriel then kills him, with no choice, saying Amen at the end. Beautiful again! Great character development.
In the end, it's morning and they think they've killed everyone when a girl announces on the walkie-talkie that they have Maggie and Carol! Tense way to finish the episode. Overall, fantastic episode with a slightly slow start, but excellent finish and great amount of character developments! Man, when Negan arrives, the show is going to change forever.
The Walking Dead: No Way Out (2016)
An episode done right!
The episode begins with Daryl, Sasha and Abraham being stopped by Negan's group. They silently hand over their guns, and being obviously curious, Abraham asks who Negan is, which pisses off the leader of the motorcycle group, as he points his gun toward Abraham and Sasha, only to put it down, and he knows that they're hiding additional weapons. He instructs one of his men to go with Daryl and retrieve it. And boom! The group is blown and burnt to bits by the rocket launcher Abraham earlier retrieved. Excellent use of it by Daryl.
Meanwhile, Sam not being used to the cruel world of walkers, remembers Carol's speech to him and loses his calm, getting eaten by the walkers, while his mother doesn't let go, thereby causing other walkers to eat her which puts Carl at risk. Rick then cuts off her hand, and rescues Carl, only to see that a gun is pointed at him by Ron. Michonne quickly impales Ron, but he manages to shoot. Rick is safe, but Carl loses his eye. Gruesome. Rick loses his love, and his son is shot for the second time, on Valentines' Day. That's Walking Dead for you. Ouch!
The Alexandrians finally gather the sack to fight the walkers, when Rick goes on a freaking rampage, which was beautiful btw. Rick completely lost it, and thus inspired the Alexandrians to fight back finally, instead of constantly hiding like they did before. Daryl then uses the glorious RPG again to burn the remaining walkers, as the group keeps on hacking the walkers. Wonderfully done. After several dull episodes, Walking Dead is back on track with a mindblowing episode.
Now its time to rebuild and fight back! The walkers continue to remain a threat, but the group is no more afraid. And, oh, there's Negan. The guy is an atom bomb according to the comic creator, Robert Kirkman. Joffrey Dean Morgan may just be the perfect actor for Negan. This show is just going to get better!
